Border Terrier

Im posing on behalf of my mum. She's looking at getting a border terrier, next year when the prices have hopefully dropped . She has her name on a waiting list with a Kennel Club breeder .

She's wanting to know about people's experiences with Border Terrier's. her plan is to have the dog in dog day care part time , when she's at works . Is this a good idea ?

Anyone ?

I have a Border Terrier. She has the sweetest personality, loves people, is great with kids and is well behaved. She is a great little dog. However she isn't friendly toward other dogs, despite having lived with another terrier for years (they got along fine). I think it's a terrier thing as the others we've had were the same, or 'small dog syndrome'; trying to appear larger and more ferocious than they really are!

If your mum's dog starts going to doggy day care at a young age it should be OK for it being around other dogs as it will be the norm for the dog.

The other thing to bear in mind is Border Terriers need to be hand stripped twice a year to keep their coat tidy. You can do it yourself but it's time consuming and really hard on your hands. It costs around £45 at a dog groomers.

We have a Border/ Patterdale cross. She's 12 now but totally agree with above poster. She has been a fantastic family dog. She doesn't mind big dogs but small ones in jackets - she hates!

I have one lying right behind my chair. He's a sweetie pie, loves his family, always up for a walk despite his arthritis, pretty patient with kids, but despite ££££ on trainers, it's still 50/50 whether he'll go ballistic at another dog on the lead. Also, he's now nearly 11 and it's only in the last year that he's stopped barking at anything and everything - passing walkers, cars, postmen, the wind, a leaf falling off a tree, imaginary cats, etc.

How active is your mum? Terriers are pretty active dogs - ours used to get a bit annoyingly destructive self-employed if he didn't have at least an hour's off lead walking a day.
