Picked up my new rescue today

He's adorable, doesn't really know his name as he's only had it in the rescue for a couple of weeks.

We walked my current dog on neutral ground to introduce, seemed fine, plenty of cheerful sniffing.

Get them home and there ain't a lot of love yet. They growled at each other and then new dog went for old dog. Dh was holding old dog and pulled her away and got bitten on the arm for his trouble.

We're all being very calm - they're just staring at each from across the room
now. They chewed a toy earlier next to each other.

Think it's going to be a bit of a long haul. New dog is only young and my old dog (3!) is very independent - new dog has barely been off my lap.

Any tips greatly appreciated

I would take new dog back.
Current dog doesn’t deserve to be growled at in his own home for from the sounds of it absolutely nothing.

So do you think new dog would have bitten old dog then if DH hadn’t intervened?
I would return.
The new dog sounds intensely uncomfortable around other dogs.

That’s not calm.
‘Staring at each other’ is threatening each other.

Or did the older bite your DH?
Either way, the two dogs sound intensely stressed.

My old dog is very placid but would make mincemeat of new if she went for him - she just looked at bit bemused at him

New dog has been totally fine in a pack of dogs at rescue so I think it's just settling in problems

There's been a bit of bonding against a common enemy - my neighbour turned up while I was encouraging them to go wee wees and old dog started woofing and new dog joined in - they actually paced the garden together without growling at each other so I am feeling a bit more hopeful

I've been reading online that it can take up to a month

New dog caught Dh's arm as he went to lift old dog down to the ground - new dog definitely didn't mean to bite him, it's a very small underweight dog less than a year old

Hopefully just settling in and they’ll be best of friends eventually 🤞🏻

For the first time they're now snoozing near each other

We had one collie and took in another older one. All fine outside but as soon as got inside new one flew at other. DP separated them physically. Ended up best of companions.

Current rescue and new dog took months to settle. To start when home alone, both left in same room but one caged. 1 year down the line and massive progress however are not left with food or toys unsupervised. This isn't ever going to change. Early days but do not leave unsupervised any time soon.

Give it a few weeks for the new pup to settle in you only just got him. Your new pup will have had two different environments in a short period one the rescue then your new home.
I've got 4 dogs just got a recue in the mix 4 weeks ago. They will get on in their own time.

I'm not going to pretend to know anything about what you've posted, but I noticed I think you have your new pup on the sofa in that pic? I follow dog behaviour pages on Facebook and they say it can encourage resource guarding in new dogs in the home if you let them on the furniture in the first few months. Might be worth looking into

Well the fact that they can sleep in the same space seems positive. When I took my rescue home to my older dog, I had adaptil collars on them both, a plug in , and the vet gave me some nutracalm tablets (herbal) for new dog.
If you can’t get those, a tiny amount of rescue remedy night ( no alcohol version) can help.
I gave them time together and each one on one time with me or DH. I didn’t leave them alone together for about a month.
It wasn’t instant but they are a team together now,
