Currently have a miniature dachshund, not my choice and not my fave breed (though obviously a lovely little guy) he has had lots of medical problems.
Growing up I always wanted a big dog, an Alsatian or a rotty, but as I've got older and had kids I don't know whether I'd ever get one.
I love Staffies and had a gorgeous boy but the reactions I got from people put me off getting another.

I love Jack russells, think they are perfect little things.
I would always get a cross breed in future.

Tell me about your doggos and your fave breeds 😃

@Branleuse I have two Staffies and I absolutely adore them! They are so loving and friendly and wouldn't hurt a fly lol No issues with others dogs either and it's make me mad how they are judged so badly!!!

farmertom · 04/07/2020 22:26

@Bergerdog just had to google, wow! They are stunning looking dogs I'd certainly have to stop and ask you if I could stroke one.

I bet food costs are high!

Also I would feel very safe sleeping in a house with them

@farmertom they are honestly perfect. They sleep most of the time, never ever bark, intelligent and easy to train, friendly with everyone and are bred for excellent temperaments. They are happy with as much or as little exercise as offered and have happy glass half full personalities.
They are expensive to keep though. Insurance and feeding them is expensive but they don’t actually eat as much as you would think!

Greyhound. Elegant, sleep a lot, not too demanding in terms of exercise, an interesting history, great nature, idiosyncratic - and look like a loping short haired wolf.

Glenthebattleostrich · 04/07/2020 22:43

I adore German shepherds and staffies. Grew up with both and there's something about the look a staffie gives you as they smile at you that makes you fall completely in love 😍

Currently have a cockapoo (rescue) who's an utter arsehole. But I absolutely adore her. We are on the lookout for another rescue poo or poodle because I childmind so the parents wouldn't trust a staffie because of the stupid reputation they have.

I do love Cavaliers, we have one and he is the perfect dog for us. We have been fortunate with ours he is 8 with no health problems and is very fit and active, loves swimming and his ball and very loving of everyone. But yes, the health risks would sadly put us off another, both my Bils dogs developed health issues relatively young and it is so very sad to see.

I have always loved Irish Setters, they are so beautiful and graceful but also clown like in personality. We bumped into one a couple of weeks back and I was in dog heaven having a good old fuss of him.

We had a lovely mix - choc lab with an Australian kelpie . So soft and gentle , perfect off the lead , never approached other dogs, understood so much, brilliant with kids. Everyone loved her., she died in lockdown and I really don't think we will ever find a dog to replace her😢

OllyBJolly · 05/07/2020 08:38

Had a gorgeous Old English Sheepdog for 13.5 years. So loving and friendly. Needed a lot of exercise which was great because kept us fit. Grooming was a bit of a pain but we kept him short in summer. Rubbish guard dog - he would lick an intruder to death if anything! No serious health issues other than a dodgy tum which was always overnight...

I wouldn't get another if only because he was too big and heavy to lift on my own. If we get another dog, and it's still an if three years on, we're thinking Border Terrier or beagle.

Gingerninja4 · 05/07/2020 09:56

I currently have a lab who is nearly 6 and is fantastic easy to train, alks well on the lead good recall, funny and all round brilliant .

I don't mind the walking knew part and parcel of a lab we often out for hours all weather's

Next dog if get another , though as I am getting older .think go for smaller less walks needed especially in the rain and possibly something that not shed so much hair

Spidey66 · 05/07/2020 09:58

@PollyPolson

Border collies without doubt the best dogs ever Smile

Clever, energetic, bright, funny, loyal, fun, and a little bit weird.

Definitely!

I do have a soft spot for staffies though.

bluetongue · 05/07/2020 12:11

Whippets are the only dogs for me. Perfect size, minimal shedding and no doggy smell. They are just so affectionate and snuggly (in an angular, bony kind of way). Mine even grooms himself like a cat!

This is my show off pic of him at a lure coursing day. He is actually rubbish at lure coursing but hey, he looks impressive here [gron]

Personally i love the polar breeds. They are highly intelligent and love walking. I also love going sledding in the winter when we get snow and scooter joring. The benefit is they rarely bark but if a ambulance or police car does go past the village its like the howling Grin. I love being up on the moors and sometimes walking I do get lost but they lead me back to the car. I do 15 miles walks up the moors regular with them and they are my eyes and ears. I have husky x malamutes. They have some character.

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 05/07/2020 15:15

I've always had a thing about rough collies but i don't think i could cope with the grooming. My first dog will be a poodle. Id love a white standard poodle but i think that might be too much dog for me - i just think they're so elegant.

Peachypips78 · 05/07/2020 15:18

Mini schnauzer. Best dog ever. I'll never have another breed now!

I love terriers, especially Jack Russells and Yorkies.

We ended up getting a mix of both and he's brilliant, great with kids, easy to train, besotted with dd and I and very loyal. He does sometimes suffer with small dog syndrome but generally is fine with other dogs.

I’ve always had collie crosses and I love them, but I’ve always really, really wanted a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. I’ve only ever met a couple and they were just fabulous dogs.

GalactiCat · 05/07/2020 19:01

I have a pack of Cavaliers. 🐶🐶🐶

Alltheyoungpups · 05/07/2020 19:08

Dalmatian - loyal, loving, beautiful, great with children and runs for hours. Best dog ever.

Syrrup · 06/07/2020 16:33

Tibetan Mastiff. They're real personalities with some cute quirks and absolutely beautiful (the authentic type, not the over-bred Chinese type). They're clever, loyal, love being outdoors, quiet indoors, and surprisingly gentle once they know you're a friend. And you will never, ever get burgled.

I don't think many people are going to share my view on them mind!

CandidaAlbicans2 · 06/07/2020 17:29

Rottweilers for me. When I made a shortlist of the breeds I liked they ticked all the boxes; big enough to be "big" but not so much that they are shorter lived like some of the giant breeds; a thick enough coat that they're hardy, but not so much that they're prone to matting; won't do the wall of death around the lounge if I'm ill and can't walk them for a day or 2; very handsome (IMO); a good visual deterant to anyone wanting to break into the house or have a go when I'm walking them at night (although all mine were dreadful guard dogs and were very people friendly/soft as anything Grin)

I also really like Staffies and may adopt one if I ever get another dog. I'd also be tempted by Leonbergers or Bernese MDs although don't know much about them.

ShadowsInTheDarkness · 07/07/2020 10:21

Another vote for spanners. Mad, bright, people loving dogs. Currently have a sprocker pup, already planning to add a rescue cocker in a year or so.
