Dog ate roast chicken carcass..

...just now in the park, some idiot had left an entire roast chicken carcass next to a bin and my dog sniffed it out and wolfed some down before I got to him ( par of the chest cavity bit I think it was).

Any advice about what I should do? I have heard giving them bread can help cushion wee bones on their way through the sytem?

People are so irresponsible, leaving stuff like that lying around.

Chances are he'll be fine, the breast bones are fairly soft. I suppose you just keep an eye on him and hope?

Yes, I think that's all I can do - he gets incredibly stressed / snappy at vets, so unless it warranted it I don't think I'd take him if he seemed fine - and I guess he could damage tissues vomiting it up if he was given an emetic?

Has anyone heard of the bread trick before?

This has happened in the past and he has been ok thank goodness. He's a working cocker that needs to run and I don't feel it's fair to keep him on lead all the time but he's got such a good nose he could sniff this out at 100m and run far faster than me!

I would ring the emergency vet too. I would be worried about fragments of bone causing internal damage. They will know whether he needs to come in, and what to look out for if not. I have a dog that gets stressed at the vets too, so I say that with the best of intentions.

I read a vet say they had never seen or heard of a fox suffering damage from chicken bones and it seemed unlikely a dog would either.

Thanks for your posts. I kept him with me upstairs through the night to keep an eye on him and although he stunk the place up with farts and he had to go out outside at 3am to poo he seems to be fine and his usual self.

I will continue to keep a close eye on him. I did give him bread roll pieces to chase down the bones in case that helps cushion them as they pass through.

I think problems with bones is unlucky rather than inevitable.

My dog did exactly the same, dived under a parked car and ate it under the car before I could get her out.
It was at night, so I googled and found the advice to give white bread, which I did, and she was totally fine.
However that’s emergency treatment rather than professional advice.
