My whippet boy has a corn

Been to the Vets yesterday and they have recommended surgery despite a high chance the corn will reoccur - I'm not keen on the general anaesthetic or the poor success rate, the long recovery time. Having reflected on it I wanted to make an appt with the Vet to discuss further - but they are too busy to discuss and have cancelled the surgery.
Has anyone has success with alternative approaches? So far I have read about duct tape, sanding it down and applying a topical gel made for animals containing Salicylic Acid 6.6%, the vet using what amounts to a drivel drill to remove the majority of dry skin (this would need to be done post lockdown) but can be done without a GA. Or recommend a vet who specialises in corns?
We've got a boot for him and will pad it properly and only walk him on soft ground in the meantime.
