I have rehomed a quiet Gorgeous 5 year old dog. I live with a friend who has a mixed breed who has been only dog for 3 years. Old dog is very jealous and barking at my new dog. Am giving them treats at the same time, walking together. Old dog is sniffing her, my girl not that interested. I’m hoping things will get better as it’s been less than a week. I have her in my room at night, tonight old dog got in, jumped in bed and barked in her face. Any advice please?

Also to add I’m worried how things will go when everyone is working again and out of the house for a few hours each day. Want to be able to leave them and know they are both safe.

It's very hard to tell without seeing the body language but hopefully it's a matter of time. If the existing dog is unsettled you need to give him plenty of space and and distance from the new dog.
A stairgate on one of your rooms is really useful as it keeps the dogs separate and safe, but still means they can see each other and you. It also means that you can relax for a bit!
Avoid anything that might cause conflict like high value treats, bones etc
Parallel on lead walking is a bonding experience for dogs, as is doing scenting games together ( there's a FB group call Canine Enrichment which has loads of ideas for this)

Honestly this sounds like something where you'd really benefit from the input of an APBC or CCAB accredited behaviourist. I imagine some of them are doing remote video consultations during lockdown?

It's a good idea to use a baby gate when they cannot be supervised, though I'd be sorely tempted to use two, with a 'no mans land' in the middle, ideally so they can't see each other, to avoid creating a flash point at the "border" between "territories"

At the moment we are with them most of the time. Will take all this on board, and I thank you for the input.

They are both so cute!

Mrsjayy · 03/06/2020 06:52

They might be the cutest dogs I've seen in my life Grin they ,might needed to have sorted out tolerable order to see what is what . Did I mention how cute they were ?

frankie001 · 03/06/2020 18:01

They are certainly cute!! I love how quick they have got used to each other! My girl only has one eye, so if he sneaks up on that side she does get a bit of a shock! They are both asleep at the moment, but am sure once dinner is served they will wake up!

For their fans, here they are social distancing, with their now mutual friend in the middle!

aww I've just noticed she has one eye bless her, do you know what happened to her other one? And I would love to see a pic of her after her grooming, she is super cute!

frankie001 · 03/06/2020 20:46

She is 5 years old and was originally rescued from a meat market in ?syria. Lived with her old owner from 10 weeks old. She lost her eye when she poked under their next doors fence and a bull dog sat on her head. She has been rehomed as owners son has a new diagnosis of autism and was a bit rough with her. Owner was worried she was going to get hurt. She was very well loved by them, and I’m still updating her. I’ve always wanted a dog but never been in a position to have one, so everything has worked out amazingly. My first dog love was a neighbours, who I walked. It was a Pekingese so feel I’ve gone full circle!
