Dog had her spay today

As title says dog (a 16 month GBGV) had her spay today, Vets said it went well but that she was very responsive to the drugs and would be woozy for a while. She couldn't even walk to the car so me and vet Nurse carried her by her front and back legs. Same to get her out at home with DH. She slept a couple of hours and has walked (very slowly) outside for a poo and then fell asleep standing up. She's now asleep in her bed. I've put a little food out and water too. Anything else I should do for her? I have painkillers for tomorrow.

I have no experience of spays, but when mine got neutered, I just let him sleep it off.

He came home from the vet at midday, slept all afternoon, had dinner, had a poo, went back to bed and slept until about 8am the next day! We then took him on a short lead walk and let him rest. He was more tired than normal but the day after he was absolutely fine and back to normal.

They bounce back really quickly :)

was it a full spay or keyhole?

Is your vet still doing neutering? Damn, mine is currently emergencies only so Lord knows how long we'll have to wait for ddog.

Ours was sleepy after her spay but completely back to herself the next day after sleeping it off. They do bounce back very quickly, too quickly so you have to be careful they don't damage stitches. Even when toileting in the garden we kept ours on lead.

Lovely. but those who have lumps, or have other issues and on and on cannot get an appointment to see a doctor.

It was a full spay, she has a scar and several stitches on her abdomen. She slept all afternoon, then stood next to the door looking very sorry for herself poor thing and let us carry her outside for a wee and a poo and went straight back to bed bless her.

maresydoat, what on Earth? You can't compare the two 🙄

A dog walker friend told me that she put her dog in a tiny babygrow to stop her trying to get at the stitches. I am going to do this when we finally get our pup spayed.

CafetiereCoffee, our vet did this for ours, it has really helped (so far anyway). She'd have chewed the cone off as soon as she was able to. She's a bit perkier this morning, still very slow but thankfully her wound looks nice and clean and she's been to the toilet properly and has eaten a little bit.

mini how many seasons did your dog have before the spay? Our pup has just come into season (still at dribbling stage so the worst is yet to come) and she is 10 months old. I think we can get her spayed in about 2-3 months when the vets will be back to normal, hopefully.

CafetiereCoffee she had one, at Christmas time which I believe lasted about a month all in. We weren't intending to let her have puppies and she had a tough time of it with big boy dogs trying to bite her and attack her even when we kept them separate from her so we decided to get it done. I'm glad it's been done as I think another month and she'd have probably had another one.

She's now happily sitting in the garden with her head up to the sunshine. Still obviously moving very slowly but seems more comfortable and less 'zonked out' though clearly she's not as alert as usual. But I'm happier with how she is today.

Tomorrow is Day6 and she's looking and seems fine in herself now 👍 Her tummy appears to be healing nicely, she's being weaned back onto her own food (gets a bit fond of the chicken & rice at times 😂) and tomorrow we'll take the compression bandage 'baby gro' off fully as she's been leaving her wound alone. I would say make sure you have something available as an alternative for those times they soil because they do, even when outside if they're desperate and we haven't noticed. We used her Xmas jumper which still just about fit 😂
