She eats kibble and tins. We gave her a raw chicken wing tonight which she loved. How many would you feed a 4 month old cockerpoo?

I would never give a dog chicken wings, She will crunch the bones and could pierce her mouth throat or gut, very dangerouus

Raw chicken wings are fine, mine have them all the time but they are exclusively raw fed.
Weight bearing bones are the ones you need to be careful with.

Raw bones are fine - cooked bones are a no-no. For a 4 month old cockapoo, I'd give 1 chicken wing.

I chicken wing a day or as a treat in a week,? We dont give her cooked bones or big bones. Just the chicken wing. She loved it.

When I was mixing raw and premade dog food, I weighed the bone and just subtracted it from the daily kibble allowance.

I’m not keen on feeding raw as I’m not set up for managing the risks. Feeding her a raw chicken wing on the decking, I think Is an acceptable risk.

Depends on what risks you're worried about. If it's the public health risks then it actually doesn't matter if you feed her entirely raw or just the odd chicken wing. If it's carrying pathogenic bacteria, it's a health risk.

Basically if you wouldn't eat it raw because of food poisoning concerns, then it's likely those same food poisoning bacteria will colonise your dog's guts and be spread by her.

As long as you take basic hygiene precautions, raw feeding is not a public health risk.

Dogs excrete pathogenic bacteria in their saliva which means they carry it on their fur and shed into the environment, so are a public health risk to anyone in their environment.

I don't really have an opinion - I couldn't care less what you feed your dog except for the risks you may be generating for others, and I do believe in being informed.

So I'm simply repeating the science - you can claim that science is opinion or bollocks if you prefer. I personally think it's a bit arrogant to think your opinion is more reliable than scornful research....

No because for most people with functioning immune systems, the risks are low and mediated by good hand hygiene, however for the immunocompromised there is a risk of infection. It's more about social responsibility than personal risk.

It's perfectly safe to give raw chicken bones and it's meat to dogs, as long as you supervise when it's being eaten. I used to give my pup a chicken wing and he loves them. The only thing you might need to be aware of, is that some woofers are allergic to chicken, so if your pupsicle gets any skin issues or the like, it might be that.

Nothing in those articles refers to dogs carrying salmonella in their saliva, they only talk about them potentially having it in their poop. They also reinforce the point about good hygiene being necessary - something which all dog owners should practice anyway.

Yup it's entirely possible that the saliva may remain in contaminated if a dog never licks its arse....

But since you don't believe that dogs can shed Slmonella, it's a moot point isn't it

Oh and of course the saliva will remain uncontaminated if it doesn't come into contact with raw meat either

I have a 19 month old cavapoo and 6 month old Cockapoo who are raw fed. They have chicken or duck wings two or three times a week, fed frozen. When my cavapoo was fed on wet and dry she still had frozen raw wings a few times a week. They are fantastic at cleaning their teeth naturally.

Vet, you come onto raw feeding threads and make the same point, using language that deliberately conjures up an incorrect picture. You leave the impression that dogs shed salmonella in the same way they shed hair and that pet owners who feed raw are a public health hazard - this is what I mean by bollocks.

If you came onto threads and said that raw feeding can increase the risks of salmonella poisoning and that scrupulous hygiene should be practised to mitigate this, that would be a different story.

Raw feeders understand the risks around handling raw meat and the ones I have met are scrupulous around hygiene practices, including picking up their dogs poop and cleaning down surfaces, utensils etc. The same practices that are recommended in those papers.
