Saw a Newfoundland today

I saw a newfie today, so special to see one in real life. I'm desperate to get a dog, slowly chipping away at my husbands resistance. I know he'd never in a million years agree to such a big dog but apart from the drool i'd absolutely love one. Anyone have a Newfie and any thoughts on the breed? It really is a pipe dream but maybe one day.

I love them so much too! Like a big dribbly bear. It's also my dream to have one, probably in a few years' time.

The one I knew was really really chilled and gentle. Bloody good job at that size too, haha.

I knew two Newf sisters, they were gorgeous. One snored really loudly; the other one had knee problems (my ddog who is small/medium snores quietly and also had knee issues, but much less weight to support).
I have neighbours with one now who is a beautiful dog too.
But I'm in the adopt, don't buy camp - greyhounds are very elegant and telescopic. I'd like a greyhound!

I know four. They are great but huge! And their barks are booming. Their owners are amazingly disciplined with them - very strong trainers.

I have two friends with them. One is 11 now... absolutely ancient in Newfie terms and he is a slobbery gentle giant.

The other is 7 months old, utterly gorgeous and totally bonkers... even my puppy who is large and full of energy gets a bit fed up after twenty minutes of the Newfie chewing her ears Newfie puppies are hilarious as they are huge and clumsy!

Ive got two brown Newfie sisters, they are completely devine. The are kind sweet gentle & very loving & thankfully my two don't dribble at all. Love them to bits x

I see one being walked round here quite often, he's enormous and such a stunning looking dog. I like to cuddle up with my dogs and I'd say he's a bit big to share a sofa with, unfortunately.

I was thinking you'd probably need to get the dog his/her own couch. I'm forever looking them up online and reading about all the amazing water rescues they've done. To those of you who have newfies do you take them to the beach much? I saw one swimming along beside a guy on a paddle board when i was on holidays last year.

Sounds like they having beautiful temperaments too.

Newfies are quite popular where I am in Canada, I have quite a few as patients. They're lovely dogs, very laid back and gentle, although they shed hugely and some of them are definitely on the drooly side! Have you looked at Bernese Mountain Dogs? Smaller than a Newfie, less hairy and drooly but lovely natured and stunning to look at - they're extremely popular here and I can totally see why.

They are fabulous but the short life span is heart breaking.

You also need to consider all aspects of having a giant breed. They cost a lot more in feed and grooming, you may need a larger car to transport them, they need to be very well trained, otherwise simple things like going for a walk become impossible, and you can't be too house proud as slobber and hair quickly get out of control.

Yeah I've definitely realised from all my research that getting such a huge, drooly dog is a major life decision. My husband would never agree so it really is just a dream. Though if i had to choose between husband and Newfie it would be a close call!

I love Bernese mountain dogs two. Beautiful to look at but i don't know much about them otherwise. Off to google..

We saw lots at Crufts, and St Bernard's, they were absolutely incredible and I fell completely in love with them!

Unfortunately they're far too big for our house avd lifestyle so they'll remain a dream for me too.

@bumpsadaisy11 they are stunning! You're so lucky. Have you a big garden or is that even necessary?

A lady near us has one. I love it when I get to say hello.

A Newfoundland would be my lottery winner purchase. Along with a huge house and cleaner for the hair and drool.

I think they're absolutely gorgeous, but one would probably take up my living room, and I'd be really sad at their short lifespan. Beautiful, special dogs, though.

Great advice from everyone so far, I would like to add that pet insurance /vet fees for these dogs will be very costly, so that's something to take into consideration. Gorgeous dogs though!

I still remember seeing a REAL LIVE BLOODHOUND! while out for a run last year. So exciting

Our neighbour had 5 in a very small house. Once had a cuppa there and couldn't drink it as it was full of dog hairs!!
*as a Husky owner that's quite normal!!
Was quite surprised I got a seat tbh!!

@JesusInTheCabbageVan I've never seen a bloodhound in real life. Beautiful looking dogs for sure. Excuse me while i go read the entire Wikipedia page about them.

@jesus someone in my area has a bloodhound. We live on a cycle way so I sometimes get the privilege of seeing him stroll past my window 😍

The man was only about 5 foot and he took them all out. Can't say they looked very organised /controlled. He was a blur trying to keep walking with some sort of dignity!!

Lovely dogs but the drool 😱 plus they can be really stinky if not looked after well
