Puppy Crying At Night

We got a new puppy just over a week ago and he's been great. At nights he was sleeping in the living room and didn't crying, even on the first night. But he's started chewing the furniture legs so we decided to move him into the kitchen. DH put a baby gate over the kitchen door and we moved all his toys, water and bed in there. He cried what felt like all night ! Does anyone have any tips? I'm not moving him upstairs to my room as he's not toilet trained and I don't want him pooping on my bedroom carpet.

Dogs are social animals, they live in packs. He is crying because he's anxious that the pack has abandoned him and it doesn't feel safe.

I would get a crate (will come in so useful) put it in your bedroom and reassure him that you're there.

And please post a photo, as in these lockdown times we need photos of puppies! What breed is he?

But he didn't cry before ? For a ten nights ? We have a crate just getting him used to it now but I don't want to put him in it overnight as when I get up there's a few pees and poos on the puppy pad so he obviously can't hold it in

Get used to dogs behaviour changing lots over the first year or so.

Maybe he has finally found his voice and courage to call out for you.

When mine cried I did the get up, take to garden without saying a word in case he wanted to toilet then back to bed so he got used to night time bring toilet or sleep. Others move their dog into the bedroom or sleep next to them and gradually retreat.

How old is the puppy? They generally do feel more secure sleeping in a crate at night. They don’t like to do their business in their sleeping area so chances are puppy won’t go during night.

Alternatively, I’ve set an alarm to take puppy to toilet during the night say every two hours, then the next night every 2.5 hours, then every three hours and so on. Puppy gradually learns to wait for you to take out to toilet. Within a week they go all night no problem. Personally I think puppy pads prolong toilet training.

What size crate do you have @motherofgod2? We got a full size one so there is room for a puppy pad and water bowl one side and blankets other side. Our pup has gone toilet once in it during the night (we only have him a week) and it was on the puppy pad and the blankets weren’t touched. We have been letting him sleep 11pm-4.30am and out every hour otherwise.

Thanks for the replies. He's 10 weeks old. He's small, a Chihuahua x Jack.Russell. The crate is big enough for his bed and a puppy pad. I have it open just now with his bed and toys in it but he's not interested just follows me about and snuggles on the couch. I've been letting him outside but he just runs about mad I don't think he realises he can pee out there. He cries for the puppy pad if one isn't down and he needs a pee. The breeder started him on them so we continued

We have crated our dogs for the last 30 years, safer for the dog, it will get used to it but may whine for the first week, its trying to train you to give it attention.

@Funf when do you use your crate? As my pup sleeps in it at night but whines after the 4:30am wee when she is put back, but I'm not starting my day that early. So she has to go back in.

Do you use in the day too if you have to go out? I can't decide what to do, she would rather sleep on the floor.

Ours sleeps in the crate in our room, she doesn’t pee in there but that’s because for the first 3 weeks I put her out for a wee last thing, then again at midnight then again at 3. She gradually held it in for longer and slept through the night after that. She never cried.

Op you need to get rid of the pads as they are confusing the puppy into thinking it’s ok to pee and poo indoors . If necessary take him into the garden on a lead and use a cue word so he gets to learn what he’s supposed to be doing . Re the crying overnight , ours had a large pen for the first few weeks and if he cried I just sat next to him until he stopped but without actually touching him IYSWIM . Would it be possible to put his crate / bed etc in a pen in the lounge overnight so he can’t chew but is in his preferred room .

You will get people telling you crates are cruel etc. Professional dog handlers, vets, farmers, breeders etc all use them. Its the safest place for a dog when travelling or when on its own. The dog sees it as its den, all of ours often took them selves off to bed in the crate with no issues.
Here is our routine
Dog has a garden wee about 10pm then crated until we get up about 5-6am, check Emails make a cup of tea, read paper then let dog out of crate straight out for a walk if its dry, garden wee and played with if wet. Fed then kong type toy with treats stuck in it.
If we are going out for anything we can't take her for she is crated rarely more than 3 hours.
She is about 16 months old, one thing we did if we are home all day we still crated her for a couple of hours so she was used to it. Handy with visitors whilst decorating etc.
In the car we have the same size crate in one car and seat belt in the other.
We had a brief 4am whine just ignore it or the dog is training you!.
Some one we know has a house rota as the dog has trained them to let it out at 2am!

What dog is it and is the floor tiled? I wonder if its hot and likes a cold surface? On hot days ours finds shade in the garden or lies on the kitchen tiles
One other thing on the advice of the breeder, we used to buy plush beds she just destroyed them and tried to eat the zips and filling so we now use towel folded up. we also cover the crate with a throw to keep any draughts out

The puppy pads are going to be the bane (sp?) of you life very shortly. Start looking at getting rid of them and taking him out during the night for a pee/poo.

Heartbeat dog toy worked back in the day for me.

She ended up trashing it when she was grown but it soothed her as a puppy. And she loved her crate as it was her safe space.

We just moved his bed back into the living room and no crying. I've been taking him outside every hour saying "go peepee" and praising him when he does it.

On everyone's advice on here i've lifted the pads except for at night. If he looks like he's ready for a pee a pick him up and take him outside saying the phrase. It's slow progress but he will get there. He was scared of the crate and wouldn't go in it so we abandoned that. I've never crated any of my dogs and they've been fine with no destructive behaviour. We've left him in the house himself for a wee while each day and I spied on him when we came back he was just playing with his toys

It's great you are making progress, I would leave the crate set up with the door open he may start to like it and its handy if they go through a destructive stage and for travel, its still early days yet, I am certain you will crack it, each dog is different so we have to persevere and sometimes try different things. But well worth the work for the joy they bring.

I'd leave the crate up, open and chuck some treats in there and ignore him and let him find them. I wouldn't force him in (not saying you are).

It sat all day in the living room with the door open. Inside it was his bed, all his toys and some puppy treats. He totally ignored it and lay on the bare floor rather than go in it. The minute I took his bed out of it he jumped into it (the bed) I feel we have a stubborn one

Hi sorry to revive an older thread, I just wanted to ask a question op as you got your puppy during corona. Our pup has been reserved since long before corona and is being delivered by our local breeder in 10 days (permitted according to kennel club guidelines). Whilst I know the virus can’t be transferred from animal to human I guess theoretically the virus could be on his coat where it may live for a while? Did you do any sort of ‘decontamination’ or am I overthinking this? Thanks

I think you are over thinking it. There was a bbc article about this about a week or two ago. Main gist of it was that cats pass it to other cats but nothing from fur to human as far as they are aware.

The move probably triggered the crying. My plan for new puppy arriving next week is to crate in living room and sleep on the couch at first.

If you are careful with your own hygiene all should be we
