Guess the breed

I have an almost 2 year old pup. When we got him we were told he was a Jack Russell. We only saw dad - odd, we know - but it was a strange set of circumstances which don't need going in to. I've added a few pics, from pup to now. What do people think? I don't think there's a chance he's not a crossbreed! His name is Donut, for reference!

Collie/Jack?

Yokohamajojo · 31/03/2020 08:53

Bit of Patterdale in there? very cute, I love a scruffy terrier

ErrolTheDragon · 31/03/2020 09:01

The coat does look quite collie - how big is compared to a typical jack, do you think?

Collie/jack is the sort of accidental cross liable to happen on or near farms, if that's the sort of environment he came from.

Very cute though!

fivedogstofeed · 31/03/2020 09:05

He's not a Jack Russell.
Looks like a Heinz 57 to me :)

MeanwhileAtNumber98 · 31/03/2020 09:06

He's gorgeous, I love him!
Looks like my patterdale/ jack russell cross.

MeanwhileAtNumber98 · 31/03/2020 09:07

The more I look at him the more I'm convinced that's what he is.

Funtcase95 · 31/03/2020 10:58

@Yokohamajojo @MeanwhileAtNumber98 we've come to the patterdale conclusion too!

@ErrolTheDragon he's really small!

Wannabangbang · 31/03/2020 11:18

He looks like a wirey version of a jack russell

LochJessMonster · 31/03/2020 11:26

Jack Russell/ shih Tzu.

adaline · 31/03/2020 11:42

Looks a bit Schnauzer-ish to me.

GetTheSprinkles · 31/03/2020 11:49

Affenpinscher x Jack?
Cutie!

You can get DNA tests online which tell you, can be a bit of fun

VetOnCall · 31/03/2020 19:39

Was his father a recognisable Jack Russell? Donut (great name!) could be a mix of several (small, mostly Terrier type) breeds rather than a straight cross. If I had to register him as something I'd put Terrier mix.

FinnegansWhiskers · 01/04/2020 10:17

He’s not a cross breed. He’s a mixed breed. I can see at least 3 mixes there - Jack Russell, border collie and border terrier or patterdale.

How did you see the dad but not the mum OP? What’s the story?

Funtcase95 · 01/04/2020 10:44

@GetTheSprinkles we've always toyed with the idea of a dna test! It's his birthday soon, we might treat him

@VetOnCall dad definitely Jack Russel, no mistaking! DH and I drift cars so we wanted a drift related name but 'Burnout' and 'Skids' just didn't sound right

@FinnegansWhiskers ah of course, that makes sense. We collected him from a house where we were told there were pups that needed a home and we were looking to adopt at the time so someone we know gave us the info. Dad was present, mum nowhere to be seen, we asked all the relevant questions and whilst the seller/breeder seemed happy enough to answer most, where mum was was completely skipped over. There were 4 pups left, not in awful conditions but not ideal, so we took our Donut and managed to get foster homes for the other 3, they're now all in lovely family homes. We didn't care to push any further about mum,

Oops posted too soon..

Didn't care to ask any further about mum, and just wanted to ensure the pups were found homes. We reported the seller as it all seemed a little off!

Funtcase it sounds like mum was a mongrel and breeders thought it more likely the pups would sell if they were sold as JR’s and so showed the JR as dad.

My very first dog was bought in very similar circumstances to what you describe. JR puppies advertised in the local paper. I’m talking 30 years ago. DH always had JR’s when he was growing up. I grew up with collies. Anyway we had been married for years and youngest was 8. They all wanted a dog so I went along to view the puppies advertised. “Mum” was there however, I wasn’t convinced it was “mum”. She was a JR. She showed absolutely no interest in the puppies and there were no signs that she had recently been feeding a litter. There were 2 puppies. They were, obviously, mongrels. They were in a sorry state. Filthy, smelly, thin, crawling with fleas and just lay there shaking.

I did the same as you. I bought them just to get them out of that house, reported the breeder and raised the puppies. We kept one and my dad kept the other one. They weren’t the prettiest dogs - and definitely not Jacks - but we loved them and they had a great life

Funtcase95 · 01/04/2020 11:12

@FinnegansWhiskers oh what a lovely ending! Our Donut isn't a model but we love his scruffy little head nonetheless!

FinnegansWhiskers · 01/04/2020 12:58

Funtcase Our JR was a weird looking specimen. Even his tail was odd 😂 We named him Pluto. He lived on table scraps with the odd tin of Pedigree Chum and Winalot biscuits all his life. He was very hardy. Never had an illness in his life. He saw the vet once to be PTS when he could no longer cope with life. He was 15 😥

I can’t ever remember taking him for vaccinations, other than his puppy check and jabs. He was wormed and flead regularly. It doesn’t matter what they look like. None of us are perfect. We all deserve to be treated with love and kindness. Enjoy Donut. He looks a right little character

Funtcase95 · 01/04/2020 13:57

@FinnegansWhiskers Pluto sounds lovely! Oh he's quite the character!!

What a nice little dog, I dont mind the breed so long as they are content and good with people

NeedingCoffee · 02/04/2020 22:35

Hairy McLairy from Donaldsons Dairy! Whatever breed he was, I reckon you have the same. Gorgeous dog!

HaudMaDug · 03/04/2020 18:52

LOL Hairy McClary was my first thought. He's super cute what ever he is.

Hovverry · 03/04/2020 19:53

Jack Russells can have rough coats but this dog’s head isn’t all JR.
Remember JRs have only recently been recognised by the KC so JR can refer to a wide range of smallish terriers.

JKScot4 · 03/04/2020 19:59

Affenpinscher/ Cairn Terrier/JRT was my guess.
