Unvaccinated pup - so scared

WorriedPupOwner · 30/03/2020 16:11

Our pup is 8 weeks. Just got him, and cannot find anywhere he can get his vaccinations. Nowhere will do it as it's routine. Obviously, we're keeping him in. However, we're letting him out on the lawn for brief periods just to toilet train. Once or twice, he's ended up sniffing round the flower beds before being scooped up. I've now read about how puppies can get parvovirus from foxes, and am terrified. We have had foxes in our garden in the past, and I've no idea if they've been there recently. It's quite possible. I'm keeping him in a tiny area of garden for the time being, just to wee/poo, but I'm so scared he's been exposed and will get really ill. Has anyone got any words of reassurance for me? Spinning out a bit here...

TIA

@BiteyShark - yes, I am kind of getting desensitised to the wee/poo already...

Puppeeeee!

Clearly he’s very naughty so you must send him to me immediately Grin

FFSFFSFFS · 30/03/2020 17:55

Oh he is ADORABLE - and look at those paws - he's going to be growing while you watch.

Soubriquet · 30/03/2020 17:56

Is he a cockapoo?

He’s obviously some sort of poodle cross

WorriedPupOwner · 30/03/2020 18:00

@Soubriquet just a poodle, actually. He does look like a cross, I agree (but he's KC certified, etc., so definitely just poodle)

FFSFFSFFS · 30/03/2020 18:03

His ears definitely have a whiff of spaniel. Oh but stressful as it is - what a lovely aspect of lockdown for you!

Soubriquet · 30/03/2020 18:06

It’s nice to see a purebred poodle. They are funny little characters

Loyal to family, stand offish to those who aren’t

Bit like chihuahuas...one of mine gigs the bill. The other will roll over for everyone for cuddles Hmm

Veterinari · 30/03/2020 18:06

He'll be fine and the garden is ok

It's really important that he's still socialised though

There's some guidance here
www.pdsa.org.uk/what-we-do/blog/vet-qa-how-can-i-socialise-my-puppy-during-the-lockdown

Carrying him on walks is a great idea

Wolfiefan · 30/03/2020 18:29

Oh bless him. That’s a great link vet. Thanks.

MissShapesMissStakes · 30/03/2020 18:36

Hi.

Nothing new to add but congrats on your lovely poodle. I have a mini and I really have come to adore the poodle breed.

Very loyal and love family. He's not stand-offish though with strangers! Loves all people. Poodles are great - brilliant choice!

And you will come to see that everyone thinks you're wrong about your dog being a poodle. That it HAS to be a cross 'in there somewhere'. It's because they don't have Pom poms and a shaved nose.

Soubriquet · 30/03/2020 18:37

I only said cross because most poodles are solid colours aren’t they

They rarely have a mix

Wolfiefan · 30/03/2020 18:46

They are generally solid colours. I don’t think it’s that you can’t register a non solid colour. Just frowned on in the show ring.
Gorgeous regardless!!!!

WorriedPupOwner · 30/03/2020 18:55

@Veterinari, thank you so much. Re-reading your words as reassurance, and hopefully if we keep him to the small lawn area from now on he will be OK till we can get him vaccinated.
That's a great link re socialisation - thank you.

@MissShapesMissStakes glad you've enjoyed having a miniature poodle (this one is mini, too, actually). I have loved the characters of the poodles I've met (the mum of this one is SO lovely), and the non-shedding is a huge bonus for us. This pup seems very bright and keen to learn, too. Glad to hear yours isn't stand-off-ish with strangers. Going to have to get inventive about how to introduce ours to strangers at all, but hoping the total lock down won't last too many more weeks....

@Soubriquet, yes, I know what you mean Smile

I am covering his eyes now, @Wolfiefan - don't want him to read such rudeness Shock

Parti poodles have always been around it's just that at some point the show folks decided they were undesirable and so these days anything not a solid colour can only be registered with the KC as 'CNR' or 'Colour Not Recognised'.

This blog post has lots of historical examples of parti poodles in both art and photos.

MissShapesMissStakes · 30/03/2020 19:32

Sorry I wasn't saying anything about your pup being a parti.

Mine is an apricot and people always think he's a cockerpoo. In fact all apart from two people in his18 months of life.

Quite a few times they've insisted that I'm wrong and that he really is a cross because he 'looks so much like my friends cockerpoo'. Yep. That's because your friends cockerpoo looks mostly poodle. Hmm

Unvaccinated pup - so scared
Soubriquet · 30/03/2020 19:34

A previous poster was right that most people don’t see poodles as poodles without the Pom Pom cut

Wolfiefan · 30/03/2020 20:38

@WorriedPupOwner pfft. Let them frown! We know it makes him look even handsomer. Grin

WorriedPupOwner · 02/04/2020 14:19

@Wolfiefan - he is VERY beautiful Grin
I love the term "parti" (which I think of as party Glitterball) poodle, as well.

@MissShapesMissStakes - oh, such a lovely dog you have there.

@SutterCane - very nice link - I've enjoyed that - thank you!

Thank you again to everyone - you've helped me so much on this thread. We have him inside and in a small, fenced-off piece of lawn, and are counting the days till we might be able to get him his vaccines. He's an energetic, happy little thing, and we're more in love with him daily!

One of my whippets is a particolour, can confirm he's also the party-whippet Grin

MiniatureRed · 02/04/2020 17:01

He's beautiful OP! Congrats! Lovely colouring too.

We're getting our miniature poodle at the end of May. CAN'T WAIT. I'm also worried about vaccs- we literally live inside a park so definitely rats and foxes in our garden. Hopefully by then vets will be more likely to say yes.

This thread has reassured me though and I hope reassured you! I hadn't thought of carrying pup outside when we go for our daily walk. We'll probably look daft but I think it's a good idea! Then he can still see other people, places, noises etc. Achey arms though. Grin

spiderlight · 02/04/2020 22:10

Oh, he's adorable!! So's yours, @MissShapesMissStakes - looks like a real character. I do love poodles.
