Anal bleeding

Took my dog out running, Sunday just gone
First poop, lots of blood (bright red). Didnt worry too much about this, assumed she'd chewed a stick or bone that was a bit sharp, planned to seek advice once home. Then, she kept squatting as if needing a poo again, but it was just blood. Quite a lot of blood, coming out of her. Each time quantity slightly less. Went to emergency vet who said stomach infection or pancreatitis and gave her antibiotics, probitiocs and painkillers. Thankfully she seems on the mend now but, what could this have been? It was quite scary and I'd love to have more an idea just so I can maybe keep an eye on symptoms and/or avoid further risk to her?any idea?

Call the vet and ask what to look out for. That's what you pay them for.

Definitely need a vet. Could be anal glands, unlikely to be bright red though. It's not something I would be happy to leave without an opinion from a vet.

Agree call the vet and ask what you should look out for. Ddog gets pancreatitis and bleeding has never been a symptom and why would it be? I'd push for more info.

How will random strangers on MN know better than the vet who examined the dog?

wolfie because of the 'likely '. They don't know. I wondered if other people's experiences may be able to give me more knowledge if they'd ever known a dog it had happened to (or their own obviously).

I will call my own vet but he hasn't examined her, it was an emergency duty vet. Thank you for all replies :)

Your vet will have access to the notes of out of hours vet if they had an arrangement that you go there. Then your vet can continue to advise you

Your own vet could give you advice on what to look out for in future or if there is anything you could do to prevent either condition in future. If the OOH vet was linked to the surgery then they could maybe speak to your vet.

My dog had this once.
Constantly wanting a poo and producing only blood.

She bled enough to completely soak through her bedding plus pools of blood outside.

They never identified what caused it, I was just told it was an infection of some sort.

No idea what caused it or how it could be prevented again.

I've used the emergency vet once for ddog. It turned out it was nothing serious but I still called my own vet after and he suggested we come in just to chat about what to look out for and possibly ways to prevent (anal glands) and so he could check him out again.
I know it's more money but it made me feel more on top of the situation so it was worth it.

My last dog had an infection that was haemoraghic.... basically he just bled and bled out of his back end. He was really ill and nearly died from blood loss. It was a type of stomach infection

That's awful delphic . It was very scary because I was quite far form home before it became apparent (and my dog is 6 stone, I couldnt exactly carry her home )

Well my vet didnt know any more than the on call vet. Said likely an infection but as she is on the mend to not worry about it. She's got antibiotics and does seem fine now although not quite her usual self yet.
