Is puppy mum guilt a thing or have I lost the plot?

Pup is 6 months old and I constantly feel like I’m not doing enough with him. He’s walked, trained, played with but as soon as I’m not with him I feel awful. When I’m in work I imagine him at home, bored and lonely (he’s not, he’s happily snoozing for the 3 hours). Today he hasn’t had a decent walk due to the weather, we did 2 short walks to the green. I feel bad that that wasn’t fun enough for him. I’ve now left him in the kitchen while I tidy up (mn!). Again, I feel bad but I know he needs quiet time too.

I’ve never had a dog before. What do they do all day?!!

Funnily enough I never experienced mum guilt with the dc!

Nah. It's a dog.

Thankyou! I need to hear more of that! This is not a child it’s a dog!!

I have this
I’m like but did I play with him enough today?!?! Even if I’ve been with him the entire day, but maybe he’s chosen to snooze and cuddle up to me instead of playing.

Im always panicking about how much he’s eaten/drank, how much he’s played, has he been trained and learned enough new things, have his walks been interesting enough, is he getting enough time with other dogs, does he need more chews, more toys, more training time, more interesting ways to eat his dinner, more whatever else I can think of to worry about.
My dh has told me on several occasions to get a grip and stop talking to him about dpup GrinBlush

Dog, it's just a dog. Consider a cat instead.

Lostkeyagain · 10/02/2020 19:10

You’re not alone, I am constantly fretting that DDog is not having enough fun (despite all the walks, playtime, cuddles, new toys and treats).

We realised there was an imbalance in our house when I looked at my food shop one day and realised I spent more on food for the dog than DS and DH Grin

Velveteal · 10/02/2020 20:14

I’m glad I’m not alone!

MrFumble we’ve already got 2 cats, they’re so easy in comparison!

Just a dog? Madness, they are love on legs

RedHelenB · 10/02/2020 20:33

Don't get me wrong my dogs adorable but he's an animal not a human being just as my cats were.

Ah now, this sounds completely obsessive and unhinged Confused

I felt so guilty leaving my dog I quit my job and started my own business to be with him more.
Don't worry about him not having a walk everyday, as long as you give their brain a mental workout at home with training and games they will be happy.
Dogs need between 14-17 hours of sleep broken up throughout the day so you are right to make sure he gets plenty of down time.
Dogs are just animals, but humans are just animals too.

Nojeansplease · 10/02/2020 21:05

Alright @DrinkSangriaInThePark no need to be mean

StillMedusa · 10/02/2020 23:49

I'm the same, Op!
My first dog..now nearly 9 months and I swear I worry more than I ever did about my kids as babies ( I have 4)
When she sleeps I worry she is bored, when we are out I worry if she wants to do her own thing and not play, and I worry if she's eating enough (fussy) if her poos are normal...

I've always had cats and have never worried about them in this way... I think it's the neediness of dogs that takes it to this level.

(Meanwhile said puppy is snoring and possibly sulking as I wouldn't share my crisps Grin )

I still have this Op and ours is 2 this year!
