Have you trained your dog where to wee?

We have a nearly 8 month old cocker spaniel who has just started cocking his leg to wee. I’ve noticed in the garden he is weeing against everything - the kids toys, plant pots, furniture etc. This has only just started and it’s made me realise if this continues then in the summer when there is less rain (possibly - we live in the NW!) and we are using the garden it could be really stinky and gross. Has anyone trained there dog at this age to just wee in one place or not to wee against some things?

I’ve also noticed now he is cocking his leg the wee seems to spray and dribble and is most likely getting all over his fur underneath. He is quite stinky and I can’t work out why and I’m wondering if it’s a stale wee smell. Do I need to be cleaning his tummy with a wet cloth each day?!

Can't help with the dribbling as I have a female who is very particular in her weeing and pooing habits.

I know someone who successfully trained their rottie to wee in a particular place in the garden, so yes it is possible. I've trained my dog to wee when I ask her so that she wees before I go out, or before bed.

I'm sure if you google it they'll be advice about how to go about it, although I'm sure you'll get people on here giving you some good advice.

I think you can buy special post things that will help encourage the dog to wee in a certain place.

Our dog just seemed to choose a place and stick to it, and now (4) will go on command ('command' lol - 'go do a wee sweetheart' in a squeaky voice)

Boy dogs tend to mark. Can you separate a bit for him to wee in? Mine prefers to wee as much as poss when we are out on walks.

Thanks both. He is pretty good at going on demand, but just goes wherever. He did mainly used to go on two patches of the grass when he just crouched but it’s like weeing against stuff has become a total novelty for him. He manages to do about 25 wees on a walk now 🙄

He’s reaching adolescence. He’s leaving his calling card. That’s the reason for the peeathon!!

Its a god send to train them to wee to order and also use a particualr space. So My command is "do your business" and she mostly goes on gravel

Its amusing though as if are out and about on pavements etc she will hp;d ot fr a bit of gravel and wee on there - only it is usually someones drive so I end up dragging her off - lol

He may stop cocking his leg at home if it’s a new thing , ours always cocks his leg on walks - about 30 times per hour , but in the garden he doesn’t bother to cock his leg . With regards to the garden and containing mess we fenced off a largish patio area and the dog is not allowed on the grass unless he’s supervised , it stops mud and is safer as he digs up bulbs and eats them .

Yes, but only by having a specific fenced off area for her to go on, this is accessed directly out of the back door and to go on the rest of the garden to play she has to go via a separate door.

Boys cock their legs to mar, for the most part. It's not very easy to stop them if that's what they want to do!

Ours is neutered and still marks just as much as he did beforehand. I often have to pull him away from trying to pee in people's recycling/up their front door!

Unfortunately if a dog has peed somewhere once, all the other dogs in the neighbourhood tend to follow - it's instinct!

For some reason ours like plastic to wee up at home. So we leave an old hose reel there to the right and they wee up that. You can buy posts
Also you can buy bitter apple spray and spray stuff you don't want your dog to wee on with this. They don't like the smell.
Then eventually they will only wee on the post or whatever you have there x

DM has with her two bitches - she has a fenced off section at the back of her garden. When the dogs ask to go out, she opens the door and tells them 'round the back!' and they do indeed go behind the fenced section. They're both neutered, 6 and 7yo though. Not sure if their age and their sex makes a difference tbh.

I've also got a paved area outside my utility room (where the back door is) fenced off as a designated toilet area. I pick up after them immediately and wash the whole area down regularly, it's a good use for the water from my tumble dryer Mine also only go out into the main part of the garden supervised as one of them (incidentally the same one who apparently can't piss properly, I shall get to him shortly...) is a serial poo eater. They do still go occasionally cock their legs up the fence out there but if it's not likely to rain in the immediate future I just give it a quick hose down.

On to the defective pisser: one of my whippet boys is absolutely terrible for getting wee all over himself and always has been. When he was younger and still crouched he'd get it all over his chest and now he cocks his leg it all splashes back all over his side I don't know if it's how he stands or if he's got a particularly powerful stream or what but he's six now so probably past any chance of growing out of it! Obviously being a whippet he's got very short hair so a quick once over with some kitchen roll and he's fine but with a hairier dog you might need to use a damp cloth to get him clean.

Thanks. I don’t mind him cocking it on walks I’m just worried that if he starts weeing all over everything in the garden then it will be smelly and germy when the kids are playing with things. I might attempt to train him to toilet in one area, would def make poo patrol easier as we have quite a large garden. I intended to do that when he was a bit younger but then I was just happy getting him to wee outside. He might also calm down with cocking his leg at home, he isn’t doing it all the time at home.
