Puppy squinting

Is this a definite trip to the vet - I’m hoping not.

This morning she went out side, came in to her crate then came out squinting one eye
Seemed like it was irritating her
I gave it a little bathe and she had a nap. All ok
It’s happened twice more today after going outside. (But not every time she goes out)

Lasts about 2 minutes, and she’s rubbing near her mouth but not sure if she’s trying to rub her eye
And then she’s fine again and playing. Eating drinking toilet as usual. Eye isn’t red.

We are expecting teething to start any time soon not sure if related?

We’ve taken out life time cover a few days ago but you’re not covered for anything that happens in the first 14 days!!
I don’t want to get all eye care excluded from treatment for life, just because I’m paranoid.

Any ideas? ( we would struggle to get an apt before Monday anyway, and obviously regardless of insurance I will take her if she needs it)

What breed is she? Breeds with prominent eyes (french bulldogs/pugs/some toy breeds) are more prone to corneal injuries and ulcers.
If there is any blueish tinge / white patches / scratches to the eye, she needs to see a vet today as corneal ulcers can be nasty (your vets should see her but you may have to sit and wait).
Do you have a cone you can pop on for now to prevent her scratching her eye?

She just paws at her mouth for 2 seconds and I distract her with a toy or treats (fairly easily distracted)
Then the squinting stops and she’s not trying to scratch it any other time.

She’s a terrier, not prominent/bulgy eyes.

I can’t see anything wrong, once she stops squinting it looks normal

If you ever go to Europe on holiday, you should try to get Tobrex in ointment form over the counter from a pharmacy (I know I can get in Greece though not sure of other European countries). This is tobramycin, I think, and is for humans but vets in Greece recommend it for dogs and cats, etc as well. It has helped my various animals recover from eye irritations or injuries quickly (even quite a terrible one, verging on cherry eye, on one visiting stray dog in Greece - cleared up in 2 days) I always have some at home.

Just looking now and I’m not sure if it’s a little swollen and she’s being a bit quieter or if I’m imagining it because I’m panicking!

Is there anything over the counter I can get here? At the moment I’m using saline solution and warm water
I needs to go to pets at home anyway
They have a vets 4 pets I could ask there potentially

Can you ask the breeder you got her from, they are usually aware of any potential eye problems for the breed and might be able to advise/offer to have a look at her.

I understand your worry about it resulting in eye conditions being excluded from your policy, I have a friend who did not have a lifetime policy for her westie and has paid out thousands for cataract and eye ulcer problems, but at the same time eyes can get infected/develop ulcers quickly and need treatment before the damage is irreversible (her westie is now blind in one eye).

We went to a vet they said we should come back if she gets worse or it weeps but to just leave it alone for now

It’s happening just as often but for only a minute or so and the rest of the time she’s just as lively as ever and seems right in herself.

She’s breaking my heart a little bit when it happens though, it’s just for a minute but she looks so sorry for herself when it does! 💔

Bless her 😞 I hope she gets better soon. Did the vet recommend any drops?

We used RenaSan drops when our boy had a minor eye problem. It really helped. I plan to use it to clean his eyes as part of routine cleaning when I clean his ears (part spaniel).

They said to just leave it totally and see if it resolved itself
I’d already bought some drops
I think I’m going to see if it’s better again tomorrow and if not try what we got

They said they didn’t know what it was but I know we’ve had dogs in the past that get eyelashes stuck or just bash it during zoomies.
Giving it a bathe normally seems to help so I feel conflicted with the vets advice!

Did they put some stuff in her eyes to show up scratches or anything.

When I have taken ours in they put drops in that make his eyes yellow so they can check them.

Nope! They just looked and they looked fine at the time so they said to come back if it got worse/didn’t improve

We couldn’t get an actual apt but I wanted her to see someone so they just squeezed us in and had a quick look
She’s been fine so far today
Yday it happened for a short term amount or time
And today it’s not happened at all so far which is an improvement
Eye looks fine, she’s moving it, not pawing at it, it’s not red or swollen or squinting.
So I’m just watching it for now!

We had a full day no squinting yesterday
I Was relieved

Then this morning she is squinting the other eye
But I saw her scratch it first to get some fluff off it this time!

The other eye seems 100% recovered!
She’s going to make me go grey with worry
