Hello

Can anyone recommend a good pet insurance?

I've always had Petplan but they have put the premium up by £100 this year. I'm now paying £600 per year (£50 per month) for my 8 year old cockerpoo.

This seems a lot but I'm not sure if I should keep paying as they will cover my dog when she old with their 'lifetime' cover.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Hi, we are with Agria for our lab. She’s 9 months old and we’ve unfortunately had to make claims already, over £4500. They’ve been excellent. I think we pay about £35 per month, £95 excess and 10% we pay per claim too. We’ve had the vet do direct claims and we have claimed. With our other lab we used Pet Protect, the premiums did go up a lot as she got older.

We use bought by many for our OES.
Think it's about £38 pm with zero excess.
Last year we had 2 claims for an infected snout and gastroenteritis totalling £3.5k.
Paid up within days.

I'd highly recommend them.

I was with petplan for my pup, covered for life policy which I'm guessing is the one you're on? He had numerous health conditions, some of which became life-long and needed daily medication. I was paying £85 a month by the end and it was worth every penny. One particularly bad year they paid out more than twice the cost of his annual policy 4 months into the policy year - which I would not have been able to afford myself. Never once turned down a claim and we're always incredibly helpful when I needed to contact them. It all depends on your personal circumstances of course, if your pet has any preexisting conditions that won't be covered or if you want life cover somewhere else at their age now, but personally I would wholeheartedly recommend petplan to anyone.

Bought by many. We were paying over £50 a month for our golden retriever with petplan, now we pay £28

Oops pressed too soon. Our 12 y o working cocker is on a £24 a month deal with pet-insurance but we going to change him over to bought by many when we can. From memory my 12 y o has minimal cover. Have paid out for 12 years and never been able to claim. All his problems have not been covered.

Petplan is expensive because it's the best there is, and they can usually pay the vet direct instead of you paying and claiming the funds back

I recently had to claim for my cat with Pet Plan, they paid without a quibble. More than covered what I've paid in premiums over the years. Vet direct claim which meant I didn't have to find a grand out of thin air.

PetPlan really are very good at dealing with claims.
I totally understand what you’re saying about the monthly fee going up every year, it is a lot and it is annoying. Bear in mind your breed is cheaper to insure which is quite good for you.
I’m stuck with PetPlan, accident prone dog when young, they’ve been brilliant but it’s so expensive. My dog is half the age of yours and the monthly fee is a lot more on a for life policy. I’m terrified of changing as there isn’t anybody else I think offers the same cover and service.

I'm with Legal & General, £29 per month for lifetime cover, 16 month only pedigree bull breed.

I've only had to make one claim so far, I filled in a form vet filled in their part emailed it off and a few weeks later money was paid into my bank.

FrangipaniBlue I didn’t know others did a good for life pet cover. So if you pay nearly £30/month now that means you’ll probably be charged around £120/month by the time the dog is 8 years of - guesstimating but it does go up every year based on the age of the dog and breed.
I think it'sjust one of those things we have to keep.

With an 8yo dog check not only for premium increases, but also changes to the schedule - increased excess, increased owner contribution percentage, etc. It's the point most policies change and everything gets more expensive.
