Anyone adopted a dog from Romania

BillThePony · 01/01/2020 20:37

This is something I am considering along with looking at UK rescues, I just wanted other people's experiences of doing so.

I've not had a dog since I was a child so wouldn't class myself as an experienced owner.

Also what to rescues look for on home checks?

We only have an adult dd who is away at uni, dh works from home 3 days and the dog would come to work with me the other 2.

Not Romania but we adopted from abroad, the dog was in foster here in the UK and sounded perfect for our family. Sadly he had needs we weren't made aware of and were not able to meet, we were unable to keep himSadIt was a very difficult time for all of us as we fell in love with him but just couldn't give him what he needed. I would advise great caution and try and find a rescue that offers a trial so you have the option not to go ahead.

Oh and the reason alot of people get dogs from abroad is that British kennels are full of staffies. Straight forward non staffies get homes quickly so if you have anything that goes against you like kids or working your unlikely to get them. Foreign rescues have some lovely cross breeds and some of the breeds you used to see more of in uk rescues like labradors. Sounds like you have everything going for you though so you should be top of a homing list. Another rescue I thought of that's great is four paws animal rescue in Cardiff. A bit of a drive but they have nice dogs. Good luck.

Hi OP. Glad you have decided against. Have you made any progress in finding a good rescue.

Not your area, but if anyone wants a good rescue in Bedfordshire that is for full of staffies and has sensible rehoming criteria, let me know.

MamaKarmaLlama · 02/01/2020 22:24

We have two near us, also not full of staffies so message me if you want the names. There are breed-specific rescues too. My parents got a gorgeous King Charles cross from one.

mullenwinehotfire · 03/01/2020 10:52

Why on earth would you adopt a dog from another country when there are so many already desperately in need of homes in this country. Makes no sense at all?!

LochJessMonster · 03/01/2020 10:58

@mullenwinehotfire If you read the thread you'll find people have given many reasons.

MamaKarmaLlama · 03/01/2020 11:00

Not really any valid reasons. I’m with you @mullenwinehotfire

Yes I have a Romanian rescue. I wasn't specifically looking to adopt from abroad, but found a small, local charity who had the kind of dog I was looking for.

The home check was more about the garden being secure than being big (it isn't) and I, and my dogs, were able to meet the rescue and spend time together before making a decision.

She is an absolute delight, and her only issues have been being terrified of getting into a vehicle (now working on that and she will get into my car voluntarily in search of treats) and taking quite a while to settle although she was never aggressive.

I did look at UK rescues but couldn't find the right "fit" with my other 2 dogs.

i'm so torn on this

i'm ready to get a family dog now and have seen romanian dogs advertised. glad i read this now as there are some things i hadn't considered on this thread.

I'm so sad reading all these replies about why should you adopt from Romania when dogs need homes here. Do some research about the conditions of so called dog 'shelters' over there compared to the quality of life a UK rescue centre provides and you will soon know why, these dogs deserve just as much love as any UK dog.
Secondly they do not 'come over with diseases' they are neutered, jabbed and have up to date passports in order to come over.
Thirdly if you are worried about a home check from a foreign adoption charity then i can tell you that the UK ones, dogs trust etc are ten times more strict!
We have a Romanian rescue, he is an absolute angel and deserves so much love and we get so much back from him. good luck in your search, it is so rewarding to rescue a dog, wherever they come from :)

MamaKarmaLlama · 09/01/2020 08:59

Sorry to burst your bubble but they often do come over carrying diseases, it’s a fact. And you can’t possibly vaccinate for all potential diseases.

lilgreen · 09/01/2020 17:07

@MamaKarmaLlama is on a one woman mission to stop any dog being rescued from overseas. God knows why she has taken it upon herself, she’s hasn’t rescued a dog from Romania so I would take advice from those who have.

MamaKarmaLlama · 09/01/2020 17:46

Of course I haven't, I don't want to put mine and other dogs at risk so I rescued from the UK where rescues are bursting and dogs need homes.

lilgreen · 09/01/2020 18:15

Some people can’t ignore the plight of other animals and don’t see borders as barriers to helping animals in need. My Romanian rescue has been checked and vaccinated as I’ve stated before and I have the paperwork to prove it.
