Our 12 yo greyhound is not himself. I think he’s winding down slowly towards death.

He seems comfortable. Enjoying small treats in bed. But drinking gallons and peeing gallons too... not making it outside, not bothered about peeing in the house too. Most out of character as he’s normally very clean.

Just not at all well. There’s something more going on I think. His eyes are blank.

He’s insured. I’m not worried about vets bills but I don’t want him to go to the OOH vet as it will scare him. I want to wait until tomorrow so we can see our vet. Given he’s comfortable would you do the same?

So sorry to hear this but at least he won't continue with any unnecessary suffering. Did they do any tests or scans to see what is wrong?

catnidge · 30/12/2019 17:59

Sorry to hear this and that your DH is awaiting a transplant. All the best to your DH.

He has reached a good age for a greyhound and has had a marvellous life since being taken on by you.
Hope you have peaceful goodbyes and although your heart will have a little greyhound shaped hole in it, your head wil be full of memories of the pleasure of him.

OneOfTheGrundys · 30/12/2019 18:07

Thank you all for your kind words. 💚
He’s very comfortable now. Our vet knows us and our dogs and was really clear about further tests-he advised against them at this stage of his life.
It feels odd, planning his death as such, but I’d rather it were done earlier than when it’s later and he’s in discomfort again. We’ve enough pain relief for 10 days and can go back sooner to end it all if we need to.
Thank you again. 💚💚💚

And thank you catnidge.
Life’s such a tapestry.

And if the love we feel for Billy is evidence for anything it’s that:
-retired racing greyhounds make amazing pets...
and that rescue dogs can be and are amazing family pets, despite some of the issues they can bring. 🐶

Not all rescues have issues though, obvs!! Xx

Oh, I am so very sorry to read this, our much loved girl had something similar, the vet came out to us, so she was at home at the end. The vet cried with us. I shall never forget his kindness. Thinking of you and your dear houndie xxx

Winterdaysarehere · 30/12/2019 18:56

Sadly we are also awaiting an immenemt loss. We are hoping to add another pointy hound to our family. Nothing like one.
Maybe a grey next time.

percheron67 · 30/12/2019 20:03

My thought and prayers are with you all. Please give him a stroke from me. xx

MadameLeFunky · 30/12/2019 21:08

To be missed by those that love us is as high an honour as it is possible to achieve.

That goes double for dogs, imo.

OneOfTheGrundys · 31/12/2019 10:11

💚 to all today.
Winter I’m sorry to hear that. Enjoy your strokes and cuddles.
Thank you again all. I will do extra ear scratches and tummy rubs from you all today.
Happy 2020 to you all and hounds too. X

So.
The old git has picked up again.
I’m embarrassed now.
He’s eating, having bark offs with next doors dogs, trying to terrorise chickens, head butting his way into my mums room for extra cuddles and cheese.
So embarrassed. Thank you for your lovely words all of you. I know this isn’t definitive but he has just a little longer now I think.
Thank you all xxxx

He is a gorgeous boy!
All the best Flowers

Itscoldouthere · 01/01/2020 12:49

I was having a little weep reading your thread, but happy to hear he’s perked up, enjoy every moment Smile

Handsnotwands · 01/01/2020 12:57

I had a little cry too, bought back losing my boy last year. I’m so glad Billy has rallied. And to second what another poster said, our vet came to our house to PTS and I’m sure, when the time comes, yours would too. It was gentle, peaceful and quiet.

OneOfTheGrundys · 01/01/2020 13:29

He’s still on the edge I think. We’ll have to see what happens if we decrease pain relief.
Happy 2020 to you and yours, especially the hounds 💚💚💚
