I’m pug sitting. It’s like looking after a baby goat, will he calm down?

Offered a friend a favour to look after her pug for 2 weeks.

He has been here 2 sleeps so far. He is stuck to my side, I can’t have a wee without him scratching the door. I left him in the house to look for something in the garage and he pinned like I’d left him all day!

He has a thing about our tv , it’s on the wall (I’m wondering if that’s where his confusion is) he barks at it constantly and jumps up to sit on the unit.

He is such a little gorgeous bundle of fun but it’s CONSTANT, he talks to me and the zooms around the room barking. We are having lots of walks and playing and I have a garden (he lives in a flat)
Every time I talk to my friend she just says he is normally chilled out.

Will he calm down a little bit or is this just a pugs life?

No experience of pugs specifically but dogs get excited by novelty - your house will be a treasure trove of new and interesting smells and sounds. He should calm down when he gets used to it.

DH agrees...pug is great fun but... he is also sleeping in my bed, on my bed and on my head... it’s like a really controlling boyfriend, needs to know where I am every minute of the day!

We have 4 year old pug and he was a nightmare when he was a pup! We'd Leave him in the kitchen at bedtime and in the morning we'd come down to him have moved his bed (twice the Size of him) to the other end ! Both bowls tipped over !
Ours also loves the tv and goes berserk if another animal comes on.
Pugs are lap dogs and very sociable . Have you got another friend who has a dog you could go on a walk with ?

He is certainly worse with Animals on the TV, we watched the film Patrick today, pug goat wants impressed!

He is currently chilled on my lap watching chicken little with DD so he recognises the difference between cartoon and real animals then, that quite cleaver really 😀

We've got a 18 month old pug. Also had pugs before.
They are wild when they want to be!!
It's a real misconception about them.

Ours does settle at night though. He's got a routine (like a baby lol). You can't move him out of his bed in the evening.
They do love TV too.
Our old girl, bless her, we couldn't watch anything with animals on. She would bark in front of the telly all the way through the programme.
Her fave was Paul O Grady for the love of dogs!!!

I think people with small dogs don’t notice how mad they are... I have 3, my dp came along last and he frequently reminds me that 3 toddlers fed on a diet of smarties and cola would be less neurotic

One gets jealous if I wipe the baby and not her.. if you say cheese the biggest will run to find you like her life depends on it (shout her name for a week n you’ll get fuck all of a reaction) and the third is my Velcro baby.. I used to take his bed into the bathroom with me if I wanted a relaxing bath his head is on my shoulder as we speak and I’m sitting up.. he’s a chihuahua.

I would say he is a bit anxious if he is following you round and sleeping on your head. You might try settling him down with something to chew like a pizzle stick or a frozen kong that takes a good while to eat.

Careful not to over exercise him, though. An overtired, over stimulated dog can appear very similar to a bored dog in need of exercise! Very similar to toddlers really. Good luck, sounds like you’re all having a ball

Ah, such a lovely thread. I'm kicked up on my sofa with my couch potato FilthyDogs and chuckling at your zoomy pug goat. At least it's only for 2 weeks. Enjoy it, you'll miss him when he's gone

This thread has made me giggle

I know my dog can be quite calm all day when he's with me (to the point of refusing to get out of bed, and happily going 12-15 hours without a wee, even when offered) until late afternoon, when he knows he's due a long walk.

On the other hand, when he's with DF he knows there's no recognisable routine (he's retired) so he's up the moment DF gets up, and generally seems to have far more energy because there could be a walk or something interesting happening at any moment. DF prefers morning walks, DF sometimes takes him for a pub lunch, and DF has a much more exciting garden than I do (he has wildlife, I have a concrete jungle!). On a similar note he rarely tries begging from me at home as he knows it won't work, but when I visit DGM he will beg from all and sundry in her kitchen because he knows it's frequently rewarded (DGM is incorrigible, had generations of begging dogs and really doesn't give a monkeys!)

Can you message your friend and ask what pug goat's routine is and then try to stick to it where you can? Probably going to be a struggle given it's Christmas and only a fortnight, but it might provide some help if you can stick to meal and walk times.

Pug goat has had a very chilled day today compared to yesterday.

We were up early so he had a mid morning nap on me which meant I couldn’t move so everyone went food shopping without me (result! Thanks pug goat)

We are now making gravy and pug goat is napping or licking gravy spills off the floor

I gave him a little kong but he hasn’t grasped it yet, doesn’t really want to hunt for his food I think he’d rather wait till I present it in his bowl!

I’m very attached but back to work in 2 weeks so no pug goat of my own, sadly.

This is hilarious, we just privately rehomed a nearly two year old pug. When I saw him in his old house he was still funny and cute and happy pug like (we already have one, so I have experience of them). After we got him home he was utterly bonkers, exactly like you describe and I wondered what on Earth I'd done (coupled, honestly, with a misunderstanding with my partner who thought I was just going to look at the dog, not get the dog)...life was v v tense at home!!

I spoke to a pug expert who said pugs are pretty much at the wildest age when they are two, but also when they've gone to a new home they are generally crazy for the first two days, but much much calmer on day 3. Lo and behold, by day three he was much more chilled. Bonkers, but not manic!

And yes, I agree with the poster who said once you've got a pug you will always love them!

Your pug expert must know their stuff kits we have had a more tranquil day today with lots of naps on me like a newborn baby!

Pug goat and I have just got back From,my first walk with him. He pulls on the lead like a bank robber on the run, much stronger than he looks. Very friendly with other dog so he wins a sticker there.

He has this dancing around on his two back paws thing when he is excited, I think it may be small man syndrome, he is very brave with TV animals!

He gets a mini pedicure every time we get back to the house, he does a moon walk grass flick thing every time he is on grass, ridiculous, it flies up in the air and has tufts of grass in his claws.

If he wasn’t so darn cute with that little held tilt grumpy old man face...

Omg, pug goat is the double of my pug bunny!

We rehomed pug bunny and I accidentally trip over him a million times a day because he likes to be no further than 5mm from me at all times. He also sleeps in our bed and if allowed, would like to sleep on my head.

We have two other pug crosses and they can't tolerate animals on tv, especially horses.

I think you are in danger of needing your very own pug op!

DD's pug, Beanie, was like this when she was younger, but she has settled down a lot now she's three. She is still pretty excitable when she comes to our house - she will be here for Christmas dinner, so I'm expecting a pretty lively meal!
