Dog eating more losing weight,

Hi

Our 1 year old french bulldog is losing weight rapidly. He is eating more than double the recommended amount aswell as finishing the other dogs food but still losing weight. He has started urinating in the house, drinking nearly 5 litres of water per day. Diarrhoea, has blood tests at the vet and they have all come back normal with as lightly high liver function results.
I have worming treatment about 3 weeks ago incase this was the cause of the weight loss but that's made no difference.

Anybody have any ideas? Going out of my mind with worry!

I'm not a vet, so I don't know if the symptoms are the same in dogs and humans, but if this was a child drinking so much and loosing weight, I'd be checking for diabetes.

witchesandhexs · 18/11/2019 16:54

I thought the same but apparently his blood glucose levels are fine. Bit lost as to where to turn now. Every time we go to the vet you see a different person so there's no continuation in care and the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing

Go to another veterinary practice and ask for a second opinion. Or ask to be referred to a specialist. I agree sounds like diabetes or something else serious.

Overactive thyroid is a potential cause.

Diagnosed with IBS, being controlled with hypoallergenic food and steroids x

My dog also has IBS, it’s a very difficult condition.

How long has your dog been on steroids? What dosage and is it every day? All these symptoms are common side-effects of steroids. Are your vets monitoring the effects of the steroids regularly? Most vets don’t even know about IBS, it took almost a year for my dog to be diagnosed!

Booboostwo · 20/02/2020 21:28

Sorry, just to add, the diarrhea would suggest that his IBS is not under control.

Is there a specialist vet near you? It’s a really complex condition to manage and, understandably, beyond the expertise of non-specialist vets.

My DDog is also on Mopral but he tends to have gastritis and vomiting attacks rather than diarrhea.

Hi, the original post was from a few months ago, I was just updating incase anyone looked in future for similar symptoms to see what the outcome was.

Oh, I see! Sorry about that, I didn't notice the dates. Glad your dog is doing better!
