New dog poorly belly

So I gave a lovely little dog a new home around three weeks ago, the lady I got him from gave me a little bag of food but said I'd not be able to get it where I live .. anyway I've been gradually introducing some wainwright's in with it but now I've ran out of his original food and he's got a poorly tummy. I've stopped the food altogether and have given him rice and a bit of chicken, my question is how do I introduce the dog food again and would anyone recommend a particular brand?

How old is the dog? Might it be worth getting him checked at the vets if he’s little and new to you.

Can you not order his old food online?

Thanks for the replies, I've had a look at the link and have ordered some food from there. The lady I got him from was a bit odd and kept dodging my questions when I asked about the food , just said it was from that area ( I'd driven over 3 hours to get him) I just wondered if I should keep giving him rice and chicken and then just gradually introduce the new food to settle his tummy

Oh sorry he's nearly 3, and of course a trip to the vets is obviously the next step if he is unwell

Also, dogs get runny tummys when they are stressed etc and being rehomed is bound to be stressful for any dog.

Try some probiotic paste. Has he been wormed lately?

Yeah he's been wormed , and yeah I understand it's a stressful thing coming to a new house. I was just looking for ideas on what I can actually feed him which won't upset his tummy any more

When my pup was getting over some nasty vomiting (he ate what I think must have been a poisonous flower from my Nana's garden) the vet recommended scrambled eggs and rice for a week. Hope your pup is feeling better soon and settles in =)

Little & often I'd say too rather than a big meal. I'm no vet though =)

My dog has colitis that flares up at the merest sniff of grain. What was in the old food, and what's in the new one? Could there be an irritant in the wainwrights?

@ByTheStarryNight I'm not sure what was in the old food as the previous owner gave some to me in a freezer bag and wouldn't (weirdly) tell me what it was called.

My dog has a chronic stomach condition so have had lots of periods of upset stomachs.

Wet food in my experience is kinder on the stomach than dry. You can get good quality wet food now - search on allaboutdogfood.co.uk as mentioned above.

As PP have said little and often again is also much kinder on the stomach. Whilst some vets have always default to giving rice and chicken the best advice one gave me which worked faster was to give normal food but spaced out every hour for the first day or two. Then space it out every two hours and then four until you are back feeding normally.

I wonder if he was in a special diet to manage a physical issue, e.g. I have a dog with IBD who is on allergy free diet and a dog with chronic pancreatitis who is also on a special diet. Do you trust the previous owner? Could she have been hiding a medical issue and an expensive diet requirement?

My dog has a very sensitive stomach. We got him as a pup and had a few vet trips before we worked out what the problem was. The vet recommended the sensitive stuff that they sold (Science Plan I think) which we used for about 18 months. It was better but not perfect, I think because it had egg in it. So I went to the pet shop and read the ingredients list of all the dry food that they had, I rejected the ones with any grain or egg and bought a small bag of each of Orijen, James Wellbeloved and Carnilove. I trialed him on each for about a week to see which suited him and the Carnilove was best. So he's been on that for years now and is so much better, he barely even farts unless the DC have dropped something on the floor that he's managed to eat. He also eats twice a day, about a third of his food for breakfast and two thirds for dinner.

I have a rescue dog, adopted nearly 3 years ago now. The rescue did tell me that she had vomited a bit and they had changed her diet and thoroughly investigated her and found nothing wrong. They told me to give her (wet food) that was at least 70% meat content. I started off with that but she was still getting periodic tummy upsets. My local vet said it was most likely to be allergy to a food, even if it was good quality food (he said that it could just be allergy to lamb or beef or whatever). I then tried grain-free dry food and wet food and she has been really well - I use James Wellbeloved grain-free dry food and James Wellbeloved grain-free wet food pouches (they do lamb and turkey flavours). I tried Harrisons but she definitely prefers the JW food. Lately, I've come to the conclusion that she doesn't like or doesn't digest so well the lamb version so I am dropping it. I buy all this online as the cheapest way to do it.

Pumpkin is really good for upset tummies 🙂 also prokolin which you can buy online, I always have this in my dog medical box.

Thank you everyone. He's been on a diet of rice and chicken for a few days and his poo is now a normal colour but not quite solid yet. I've ordered some "Wolfworthy " food as recommended by a PP and will start introducing this soon

I'm another who is suspicious she was covering something up regarding the food. That's very weird.

A private rescue? I would get a vet check. This could be a symptom of an underlying issue.

Yes it was a private ad. The owner bred a specific breed of dog but also had my little breed as well. The bigger dogs were kept outside in kennels and when I got to the house my little one was in a crate, it was all a bit odd.. seemed friendly enough but evasive on a few questions, my little one was very thin and had been clipped very recently, which was I think to shave off any dirt and muck that was on him, and not at all used to being indoors despite what she said. Sadly I think he was used as a stud dog for their other little dog and they decided they didn't want him any more for whatever reason. I had already made my mind up I was going to have him and I drove nearly four hours to get him. I have messaged her to see what food she used but no reply. She hasn't even messaged me to ask how he is. I will be taking him to the vets next week if his poos haven't solidified just to make sure there isn't any underlying problems.
