I’m sure this has been done to death but ...
8 week old shih tzu, used to a crate from breeder’s house. Slept 10-6.30 first 2 nights without so much as a squeak
3rd night, she woke at 4am and woofed and cried for ages. Took her out for a wee. Then... what should I have done?!!!
I put her back in crate and slept on floor next to it so she obviously came and slept on my legs and was so small and warm and HAVE I RUINED IT FOR EVER?
What should I do tonight? I know she can go all night without weeing cos she did it the first 2 nights.
I don’t want to put crate in my room if I can avoid it. I know I should prob have left her in crate but she was hurling herself at the bars. It was v sad....

Just start again and crate her.
Same as babies if she wakes, take her out to see thrn settle her and back in the crate.
We put ours in when sleepy and as a rule he goes all night. Occaisionallu he gets up but then it’s a wee, a cuddle on a lap and when drooping back in.

At eight weeks old she's very very young to be sleeping totally on her own.

Just because she slept through originally doesn't mean she won't need the toilet now - mine woke up in the night for the toilet occasionally until he was about 8-9 months old. I think it's fairly normal - in fact, I reckon you're incredibly lucky she slept through the first night!

Can you not have the crate in your room at first and slowly move it downstairs as she gets older and more settled? Or you sleep downstairs with her for a while and slowly retreat?
