Jumping

Our 16 month old pup has a terrible habit of jumping up. Never on other people (he is wary of strangers) but he thinks nothing of jumping on us. It mainly happens during greetings and if we are playing ball/stick with him. The more excited he gets the more he jumps.
We've tried turning our back on him and making him sit but he usually manages to get a couple of jumps in first! It's one habit that's driving me a little crazy as we end up filthy.
Is this something he is likely to grow out of and is there anything else we could do to try and stop this behaviour?

Put a knee up as he jumps? Middle aversive, but quite effective.

Also, every single time he jumps up, do nothing that he wants until all four paws are on the ground.

And if he starts to get over-excited, stop whatever you're doing for a few minutes.

He'll get the idea. Also, he will mature and that will help too.

Never ever ever give him what he wants when he is jumping.

Only throw the ball if he is calm - you will have to wait it out and it can be frustrating but if he learns he only gets the ball when he is still he will learn quickly.

timing is key

Turning your back consistently does work, but it does have to be 100% consistent which is the tough part. Any attention at all will reward the behaviour. You may find you are inadvertently rewarding by talking to him, or crying out when he jumps on you - for a persistent jumper this is enough to keep him going.

I think your right we haven't been firm and consistent enough. Am going to start again from scratch otherwise we are all going to be constantly filthy! He is still young so hopefully consistency and time will help.
