How old should children be before we can get a dog?

We put down our dog recently. What age should the children be before we can get another? The children are a baby and a toddler so will have no memory of our old dog. We were thinking that the youngest should prob be 4? We don't actually know and I suppose at this stage it's pretty much a hypothetical question. Despite having a cat and horses, the place is very lonely without a dog.

You know what you can manage and when your family is ready. I lost my old dog when I was heavily pregnant and got ddog1 when DS was 2 months old. She was an adult dog and I knew she was good with children though, I couldn’t have managed a puppy.

We waited until the youngest was 7, I didn’t specifically pick 7 it just worked that way but I do remember thinking afterwards I was glad not to have younger dc and a puppy
