To be truly angry about pedigrees

So today someone verbally attacked me and another person for having poodle crosses.

Regardless of the fact mine is a rescue; not sure regarding the other’s parentage they are both great dogs.

The owner in question has an over-bred breed, life-expectancy of 8 years, well-documentated health issues.

Not ever advocating puppy farms but I do think the Kennel Club and some breeders are appalling. Life-expectancy of 10 years and almost certain heart failure is ok?

Maybe she is of dubious breeding also..

So no-one should verbally attack you because of your dog's breed!

But how can you be angry about all pedigrees? That makes no sense. Some have known health issues (e.g. pugs). But to be angry about all pedigrees is overkill indeed: what about gorgeous Labradors for instance?

I think some pedigree breeders get upset as they know that many of the poodle mixes are bred in puppy farms with no questions asked about suitability, sold for £1500+ and myths are spread around like confetti (allergy friendly etc.). But it's the owner's choice at the end of the day.

I'd ignore it and move on.

Sorry if that came across as being anti pedigree dogs and good breeding There are lots of great dogs out there but don’t assume because it’s a pedigree you’re dog is exempt from poor breeding practices.

Equally don’t assume the owner of a poodle cross supports puppy-farming?

I think one of the issues is that the cross breeds are popular and people are no longer buying some of the older breeds. That means some are endangered with few puppies registered. These breeds don’t deserve this. There are too many cross breeds and it will be to the detriment of pure bred dogs.

Paying loads of money for a puppy from a breed with known health problems like the brachycephalic breeds is utterly irresponsible. Supporting breeding practices that are harmful to the dogs they produce is utterly irresponsible. I don’t think that buying a pedigree dog is, in itself, a guarantee of good breeding practices.

At the same time, all designer cross breeds are bred irresponsibly because they are bred for fashion and money, which are just as irresponsible motives as breeding for a look that causes health problems.

what about gorgeous Labradors for instance?

Not all labradors are well bred. Chocolates in particular are very poorly bred in general (due to people wanting that particular colour). People began breeding for colour as opposed to health, personality and temperament.

OP - I agree that some breeds are over-bred and it's a real shame, but that doesn't mean that all pedigrees fall into that category. Unfortunately poodle-crosses get a lot of bad press because the vast majority come from puppy farms.

Thing is, I don’t agree with bad breeding, pedigrees or crosses... I’m quite happy to give opinions and reasons when someone’s looking for a puppy or in a hypothetical online discussion.

If I meet someone with a dog I’m pretty sure is badly bred... I say ooh hello nice doggy...

Because what purpose does it serve to harass someone? Especially when it’s a dog they already own...
