What to do??

Overnight we've had to make the heart breaking decision to have our 13 year old Labrador PTS. Our lovely vets know him well and this won't come as a surprise but when I rang this morning they asked if we could bring him in. We can't - he can't get up (went drastically down hill after a lovely walk last night) and we can't get him in the car. They said they've got a vet called in sick so it might not be today. It has to be today! I've left a message for the vet to call me asap but should I consider calling another vet if they really can't do it today?

I'm hoping once the vet gets the message and realises "who" it is, he will pull out the stops but I would completely understand if not of course.

I would call a different vet. To be honest, knowing you’ve done the right thing to make your friend comfortable, making that difficult decision, that’s what you owe him. He won’t know or care that the person sending him on his next journey is someone he never met.

These things happen. Vets get sick and it can’t be helped. You just need to focus on the job in hand and as long as the person doing it is suitably qualified, you’re doing the best you can x

Thank you. I guess that's what I'll need to do. As you say, he won't care even if we do. And he's the important one.

I'll give it another half hour to see if our vet calls back and then take it from there.

Spoke to the vets. They're going yo try and get here this afternoon.

(I'm hoping the "try" is just a figure of speech...)

We drove our girl to the vets. She was unable to walk, but she had a large bed that we carried into the car with her in, and lifted out the other end. She was so poorly that she wasn't really aware of what was going on, and she died in her own bed with us with her. It was almost a relief that we were able to leave her there afterwards, and then collect her ashes a couple of weeks later. Our darling girl was also a lab, and 2 days past her 13th birthday. I could still cry thinking about her now.

Hello I'm so sorry you're here at this point with your dog, I had to have mine euthanised the week before last after a sudden decline. I was feeling desperate as the vet was on a herd test (we live rurally) and couldn't come for a while but at least got away as soon as he could. I was thinking if you do have difficulties then you could try googling 'mobile end of life pet' - I don't know if you've come across them or if they're in your part of the country but it might be worth a try. I really feel for you, there was no way we could move my boy either and it was awful :-( but thankfully peaceful in the end.

Thanks all. It's done and he was so good. Heartbroken. He came to us as a rescue aged about three and he was such a star. No issues, almost trained and a real character. He had quite a public life (like a pub dog) and everyone loved him. We were so so lucky to have him.

I hope there are limitless sausages...

Ahh he sounds a real character, I know it's all worth it for the time we share with them but this bit is just rubbish. Take care x
