Hello!
Can I join? This is MilkyPup on our way home from the vets, she is 10 weeks tomorrow, just has her first injections as the breeder said she was going to be flea'd wormed, injection and chipped and surprise! She was none of them. Lesson learned there. It's going to be another hard 4 weeks until she can go out though luckily we have a long lounge for playing fetch in!

Oh my goodness clowns that sounds really stressful! Have you got insurance? Poor puppy, hopefully it's just a bad tummy bug.

Welcome milk naughty breeder! Those first few weeks are tough when you can't take them out properly but def still go out and about carrying them. We had a doggy sling to carry dpup in!! I think the advice is that puppies should have met 100 different people before they are 16 weeks.

Dpup is actually 16 weeks today! I reckon he has met about 100 people if not more 😬

ItsMilkAndEggsBitch · 30/09/2019 20:29

@Girliefriendlikescake that's a lot of people! She's been out a few times just to the shop and things like that, might venture to the park with her tomorrow show her to some people and new doggos.

She's a springer x jack russel so when she gets going she really gets going, so excited for her to be able to dig things that aren't me/the sofa/the rugs/genuinely anything Grin

Girliefriendlikescake · 30/09/2019 20:46

It is a lot of people but it's amazing how many people will come over to say hello to a puppy 😄 garden centres are a good place to go. We also did a few town trips as wanted him to be okay around lots of people and traffic.

I also took him into the work office as did my mum, a few national trust places etc. We took him out somewhere every single day and in fact still do, for me having him well socialised is really really important.

My dads jrt is terrible around traffic, has a massive fear of buses, can't walk past building sites and it's such a pain plus obviously so stressful for the dog, I really wanted to do all I could to avoid those sort of issues.

ClownsandCowboys · 30/09/2019 22:21

I'm confused about night times and toileting.

I was googling something puppy related and found an old MN thread (2011). Most of the experienced advice was to leave in crate, let out if really distressed, but otherwise leave. Of they have accidents, clean in the morning.

I suppose because of they can't hold it until 7 months, that's a bloody long time to be waking up 2-3 times a night.

Girliefriendlikescake · 30/09/2019 23:09

Clowns I always put dpup out if he cried in his crate at night and he always went to the toilet. I always put him straight back in and then ignored any crying, but our puppy would normally just go back to sleep.

When we first got him (8 weeks) he would go 10pm -4am and then go back until 6am ish. Gradually he got better at going longer stretches and now goes 10pm till 7.30am (16 weeks.) We've had hardly any accidents in the crate and although knackering for me it was worth getting up and putting him out as I think it helped establish toilet training.

Keepsmiling1 · 01/10/2019 06:54

SmileyPup is almost 14 weeks old now and we have got up in the night to take him out since he came home. He now lasts until about 5am and then will go back to sleep but this morning it was only until 6am. Once he's downstairs he will fall back asleep on the couch with DH (he sleeps in a crate next to our bed).

When will he start to sleep a bit later? I'm honestly shattered and going through a really stressful time at work and every morning I feel like crying. I don't know if we're disturbing him when we sleep and that's waking him up early or if as he gets older he will just start to sleep a bit later. Or if we should take him out the crate (he only goes in it at night - never during the day). Any ideas? I feel at the end of my tether!

Girliefriendlikescake · 01/10/2019 08:53

What time do you put him out for his last wee keep? When he wakes at 5am does he just need a wee or does he poo as well? I think it's only been in the last couple of weeks that dpup has gone through til 7. I always insist he goes for a wee when I go to bed at about 10.30ish.

I've had fun this morning, came down to a crate full of sick 🤢 dd then thought it would be a good idea to feed him (I was in the shower) so he threw up again all over the living room 😵😫 No idea what's the matter with him, he is completely fine in himself. Won't attempt to feed him again though for a bit!!

Alsohuman · 01/10/2019 11:04

Ours stays up with me and has her last wee around midnight. She wakes us up about 4am to go out and then goes back to sleep until about 7. She’s only ten weeks so that seems to be pretty good. So far there have been no accidents in the crate.

ClownsandCowboys · 01/10/2019 11:36

Last night she woke at 12.30, 3am and 5am. She got up at 6.20am (dd was shouting). She only actually went for a wee at 3am.

Grassynoel · 01/10/2019 19:32

I had to get a tetanus shot and a week on antibiotics thanks to Gnasher. He woke at 2:30 and howled until I lobbed him onto my dd and then silence. I've really gone and done it. He's ruined.

Two poo's and two wee's so far today left for me.

Today is the first day where I really regretted getting him. I felt that way for a good hour before I melted again.

He's just done wee number three right in front of me there. I picked him up half way through and put him outside. Again. Think I'm too old for this!

Keepsmiling1 · 01/10/2019 19:43

@Girliefriendlikescake he generally has his last wee at 10pm or just before. I go to bed then because I'm so tired with the wake ups in the night and getting up early. He generally has a wee and a poo when he wakes up at 5am and then again when he gets up at 6am!

ClownsandCowboys · 01/10/2019 19:49

We've only had accident today, which was my fault as we were on our way out and I got distracted so wee by the door. She definitely understands the "toilet phrase" I use, once she did a fake wee and ran back to the door because it was raining!

ClownsandCowboys · 01/10/2019 20:24

Although just realised that she's only had one poo today. Unless she's hidden one somewhere. Is that weird?

@Grassynoel my childhood dog, my mum spent weeks training and was so sure of what boundaries she would have. For most of the rest of her life she slept on their bed, came on the sofa etc. She was "ruined" but lovely!

Girliefriendlikescake · 01/10/2019 22:28

Clowns that many wakings is tough, is she in a crate somewhere quiet and have you put a blanket over the crate so it resembles a den?

Our puppy has always slept in the crate downstairs, we have on occasion put an item of our clothing that we wore that day in with him and that def seemed to help settle him.

He also def started sleeping better once we started being able to walk him properly.

Dpup didn't throw up anymore thank God, he had a really quiet day which I think he needed and seemed fine both times I left him.

Found out today the next stage puppy class is £95 😱 we won't be doing them then!!

Calmisthemantra · 01/10/2019 22:31

Agghhhh. Mantra pup has always settled well at night, he's now almost 13 weeks and has started crying when we go upstairs . Started 3 days ago! Whhyyyyy Hmm

SunnyUpNorth · 01/10/2019 22:50

@Calmisthemantra we had a few weird evenings of him crying again at bedtime but fingers crossed has died down. Trainer said it was likely him pushing boundaries to test them now he is more settled and confident.

He sleeps through most of the time but wakes for a middle of the night poo if he doesn’t do one before bed. Then always awake by about 6am. Really hoping that gets later soon. But then he dies snooze almost all evening and I don’t know how I would keep him awake.

Mine has had diarrhoea today for the first time. Think I gave him too much roast chicken yesterday when trying to form positive associations with the nail clippers!! He has been so cute and cuddly today.

ClownsandCowboys · 02/10/2019 06:59

Clownpup slept from midnight to 6.30am! She went out to toilet before bed at 10. She cried at midnight, I took her out but she wasn't interested. Out her back and she cried, so I got some of my clothes from the day wrapped them round a heat pad and she settled. Then slept through!

Alsohuman · 02/10/2019 12:53

We had no accidents yesterday! It’s obviously a blip and there are more to come but it’s cheered us up immensely.

BiteyMcBiteFace · 02/10/2019 17:01

Alsohuman Doesn't that first day of no accidents feel like such an achievement Grin

Bitey pup is 23 weeks today I think Shock Since the 1-2-1 trainer came we have been wound free on the biting front! That has made such a difference to how I feel Smile

If only we could crack the getting on with the cat Hmm Has anyone had any problems introducing their pup when they have existing cat/s? I feel so sorry for the poor cat having to be micro managed in her movement around the house Sad

Alsohuman · 02/10/2019 17:43

Yes, it feels great, she’s doing brilliantly but it’s still early days.

Can I thank whoever recommended the bottle of stones? It 100% works when she bites us.

ClownsandCowboys · 02/10/2019 19:08

We have 3 resident cats. I've been surprised that they aren't as bothered by Clownpup as much as they were when a new cat was brought home. The youngest, seems cautious, but intrigued and follows pup around. I think they even played together today.

The other two stay upstairs, but do walk around her. She follows them, but if they run she just turns around and does something else.

I read in one of the books about ensuring the cat isn't chased, using a training lead in the house, or always restraining the dog when introducing to the cat.

We have a massive cat tree thing (it goes to the ceiling) so they are happy to sit high up and watch her.

I think it can depend on the temperament of the cat and dog and breed.

ClownsandCowboys · 02/10/2019 19:09

I'd have loved a sighthound/whippet/lurcher, but that wa smever really an option with cats!

Girliefriendlikescake · 02/10/2019 20:21

Yeah our puppy is a bugger to the poor cat, she is a very quiet, placid thing and he just runs round her barking. She has told him off a couple of times but it doesn't seem to put him off for long. No idea what the answer is, am hoping he will settle as he gets a bit older?

He's driving us mad with going to stand by the back door just so we'll open it 🙄 esp between 7pm and 8pm he does this constantly. Now it's getting colder it's so annoying as makes the house freezing! I know the one time I ignore him he will genuinely need a wee!

I'm tempting fate big time but I think we've gone 5 days with no accidents inside 😬

Calmisthemantra · 02/10/2019 21:24

@ClownsandCowboys
We have a now 13week whippet and 2 cats. Sighthounds and cats can be together if introduced from puppyhood. He just tries to play with them daily, full playbow the works -but they just glare at him Grin Even when they run he's not interested. If they grow up with cats then they tend to not chase them
