it doesnt cause separation anxiety to sleep near pup for a few weeks. I would say it prevents it. Could you make downstairs more comfortable? Pup can becrated and out of sightline but slowly acclimatizes. Our pup is brilliant all night downstairs and has been since I slept downstairs for three weeks. Please be patient with what is a baby animal

Nettleskeins · 10/12/2019 08:48

Comfortable for you. Or crate in a different room and cover crate so she cannot tell which room ie bedroom then move crate slowly downstairs over few weeks. She will wake you anyway for a pee and that is why.she will howl

MaryLennoxsScowl · 10/12/2019 09:05

I’m afraid we cracked after a few weeks of interrupted sleep - I kind of didn’t mind being woken when I thought pup needed out for the loo, but after a while we realised he didn’t need out twice a night, he just woke up and we weren’t there so he howled - so we took the crate into our bedroom and he immediately started sleeping through and so did we! DH wants to move him back to the kitchen but I don’t feel like going back to being woken up! Also, he’ll sleep from 10ish to 7 with no problem; we usually have to wake him for our usual 6.45 start and he is in no rush to get outside for a wee.

DeathByPuppy · 10/12/2019 11:08

So, we did it. He was fine. I get chronic migraine, I’ve been under a consultant neurologist for over 20yrs. Sleep disturbance/lack of sleep is a huge trigger for me, so it was definitely time.

We’ve got pre-puppy class tonight. It’s a socialisation & basic training thing for puppies who’ve had their first injection, I’ll report back as to how we get on.

DeathByPuppy · 10/12/2019 11:11

@MaryLennoxsScowl, mine definitely needs to get up a couple of times a night to use the loo, which is fine.

Ledkr · 10/12/2019 12:45

My pup has been quietly whining a bit today . I am at home and was just pottering about but she couldn't seem to settle and was digging in her bed etc
So eventually I can and sat down and she jumped up and fell asleep in me.
I guess that's what she wanted then.

BiteyMcBiteFace · 10/12/2019 15:50

Biteypup has gone to doggy day care for the first time today. I hope she has not eaten any of her fellow day care friends Blush

I had a text shortly after I left her saying that she was playing with the other 2 day care dogs (Bertie bulldog and a little cockerpoo) like they were old friends, but I've not heard anything since Hmm

DH is going to pick her up shortly, so no doubt we will hear what she's been up to all day Wink I expect her to be tired and crotchety tonight and I will need Wine

heatseeker14 · 10/12/2019 20:51

How did she get on @BiteyMcBiteFace? Bet she must be really worn out.

@Snoopdogowner, what have we signed ourselves up for?! 😂 Our attention seeking pup has been barking a lot more lately. Has also been digging in his water bowl again 🙄 He started doing it after he put a bulls pizzle in it weeks ago. Perhaps he is still trying to find the feckin stinky thing. Might buy him a raised bowl to see if it breaks the habit. Does anybody else’s pup do this?

DeathByPuppy · 10/12/2019 21:29

Pre-puppy was really good. He behaved beautifully for 85% of the time. Ironically, given how much of a PITA he was today, he was the best behaved puppy in the room, despite being the youngest (he is just 9wks, the oldest there was 12wks). It was funny though, he was the most enormous one there though, they were all tiny toy breed puppies and there was my galumphing great 7.5kg lab ‘puppy’ Grin.

Snufflesdog · 11/12/2019 11:52

I’ve noticed pup growls and barks and shows her teeth at anyone creating too much noise.
Since we got her we’ve made a point to make lots of noise in the house and she’s ok with it now.
But outside we met some noisy ill mannered adult dogs and my tiny 3kg pup growled barked and showed her teeth and her displeasure and looked like she was ready to fight!

Some noisy children ran past the other day too and she growled at them.

I don’t want her to form a habit of doing that and getting into that stressed state.
And I’ve heard if I Soothe her too much or move her away then I’m reinforcing that it’s a problem or threat.
We’re trying to introduce to calm dogs and children where possible.
Whilst we’re out and she’s calm I give treats
We are practicing the settle command at home too

Is there anything else I could be doing?

DeathByPuppy · 11/12/2019 12:28

I’ve read the same thing re soothing reinforcing stress. I think you’re doing the right thing in rewarding calm behaviour in stressful situations and exposing her to small amounts of the trigger situations so she can acclimatise.

Do you do puppy classes with her, snuffles?

Snufflesdog · 11/12/2019 15:24

Thanks just feel a bit helpless when it starts if I can’t move her, soothe her and telling her no seems to be a bad idea too?? - would that just add to the stress? I don’t know. I’m just standing there like a lemon atm though and that doesn’t seem ideal either

@DeathByPuppy nope she’s not finished her vaccines yet and they only allow dogs that have - then everywhere seems to be on a break for Christmas! We’re signed up for jan though.

SutterCane · 11/12/2019 15:39

It's absolutely fine to comfort your puppy (or an adult dog for that matter) if they're scared or worried, doing so isn't teaching them them that they're right to be scared. Yes, if you were weeping and wailing in sympathy it could make a worrying (to your puppy) situation more so but calmly reassuring your puppy isn't going to have any negative consequences.

It's worth checking if the trainer you've signed up to puppy classes with does one to one training as well. Just one session with them and your puppy could be really beneficial and give you some strategies to work with.

Ledkr · 11/12/2019 17:14

Our pup goes into a frenzy everytime one.ofmis comes home and wants to be picked up and lick is to death and make.whimper noises.
We tend to respond.with soothing hellos and it's ok etc. But then the other day it went on so.long.that I wondered if I was making it worse.
So.now I greet her more.calmly and just give her a cuddle and quiet noises and it's better.
Try telling my girls that tho as they dote on her and think she's a baby.

Ledkr · 11/12/2019 17:15

We are meeting out trainer and dog walker next week.

DeathByPuppy · 11/12/2019 17:37

Ah that’s good to know, @SutterCane.

We have pre-puppy classes for pups who’ve not completed their vaccine course. Usually 3 classes but we’ll only be able to do two as they break up for Christmas and he’ll have had his 3rd jab by the time they go back, so he’ll be ready for the proper puppy sessions.

DeathByPuppy · 11/12/2019 17:39

Ooh, @Ledkr. That’s exciting. Hope it goes well. How did you find them?

We try to keep it calm when we get home. He gets very excited when DD gets home, even though she is calm and quiet. She’s just his absolute favourite.

Ledkr · 11/12/2019 18:16

@deathbypuppy how old.is she? My dad is 8 and the puppy goes mental for her and nearly as much for dd17.
I found my puppy trainer and walker in face book local.

I have been ill.with I think proper flu and been in bed for two days.
Luckily dd is off too (not as ill but jumped on the bandwagon) so she's had the pup but god alone knows what I'd have done if not..they go on and on don't they? She whines for me to sit down or she wont.do and paces around. Then all the watching for wees and taking her out in the wind and rain feeling terrible would not be fun.
Dh is back now with bags of drugs for.me so I'm at least a bit more comfy and don't feel.as.if I'm.swallowing broken glass.

RoxiFruitcake · 11/12/2019 19:04

Sorry if this has already been discussed (not read all the thread) but has anybody else had any issues with a car sick puppy? Will she grow out of this? Any advice?

Ledkr · 11/12/2019 19:09

Not yet no but hoping she won't have it as I want to take her away in out camper next year. 😳

talia66 · 11/12/2019 19:44

@snufflesdog I am going through a similar situation with my 5 month old puppy. I noticed about a week after getting him at 3 months that if he was a bit intimidated he would growl or bark. I think part of our problem was he was small, cute and fluffy so when we were out people would constantly try to grab him and stroke him - so it made him a bit fearful.
I have worked hard to get people to keep their distance and respect that he is uncomfortable.
this website has been excellent www.facebook.com/groups/374160792599484/learning_content/
I have a behaviourist coming to my house on Friday to give me some one to one training - if you like it I can report back to you what she says?

DeathByPuppy · 12/12/2019 09:03

@Ledkr, she’s 17, so by no means a little one! Hope you’re starting to feel better, flu is bloody rotten Flowers

DeathByPuppy · 12/12/2019 09:05

The vet can give you antisickness meds for her in the car, Roxi.

Outtheforest · 12/12/2019 10:41

"Roxi" forest pup gets car sick which is not great as we do long journeys each week. I'm hoping she will grow out of it and read that most dogs generally do by 12 months. If shes still vomiting at 12 months then we will look at medicine but for now I'm just dealing with the mess and hoping she gets over it. She actually loves going in the car thankfully (forever trying to go home with visitors Blush ) but if she was to get anxious about it then we would look at medicine sooner.

Wibblytummy · 13/12/2019 18:54

Hi! Just joining in the puppy support. 14 days in with our now 10wk wibblypup! She's settled in well bar some hyper moments with nipping. Toughest ride is definitely the toilet training as she doesn't seem to enjoy the cold, the wet, the wind nor the dark. So trying to take her out in these which is 90% of the time has been an absolute battle. I've followed YouTube videos and sprinkled food and treats but then she just hunts these out and never toilets. Argh!
