heatseeker I was told cockers calm down around the age of 2. Bloody lie it was because it was 3 which is the same as what you have been told Grin😂

heatseeker14 · 08/12/2019 15:45

@BiteyShark, bloody spaniel genes haha. I think the energy from cockers could be a great source of clean energy if it could be harnessed somehow 😂 How did you manage with your dog on the lead?

BiteyShark · 08/12/2019 15:54

Hmmmm the lead thing Blush. Ok confession time Grin

Being the typical cocker he was a pain in the arse on a lead, zigzagging about with his nose to the floor. I even had 1-1 training and we started to make some progress but then I decided that I hated pavement walking and so did he. We only did it because it was expected and life is too short so we stopped pavement lead walking and just did the forest off lead walking instead.

Now if we need to walk on a lead he is reasonable tbh but I think that is just an age thing in that he is just calmer.

So the long story condensed is I took the easy way out and therefore not the best person to advise Grin

heatseeker14 · 08/12/2019 16:19

Haha I don’t blame you. It’s not enjoyable when you have to stop every five minutes because they’re pulling. We are lucky that we also have loads of fields close by to walk in, so thankfully, he doesn’t have to be on the lead for long. I don’t enjoy pavement walks with him at all.
On a slightly different subject, what age did your dog lose his puppy coat? I’ve noticed our pup’s coat looks a bit different, a bit patchy looking.

BiteyShark · 08/12/2019 16:23

We clip BiteyDog short and have done since he was a puppy so I don't think we particularly noticed any difference. It's one of the reasons people think he is younger than he really is Grin

heatseeker14 · 08/12/2019 16:28

Perhaps we should take him to a groomer to tidy him up. Looks really patchy at the moment. Still cute though!

BiteyShark · 08/12/2019 16:33

A groomer should help but I am not sure what type of coat your puppy has but be aware that lots of people say clipping affects dogs coats in a negative way but we went for practicality over asthetics (plus he had to be shaved for several operations/scans so would have looked stupid if he hadn't been clipped short anyway).

heatseeker14 · 08/12/2019 17:55

Thanks Bitey, I will ask before booking him in. He has a loose wavy coat, but I have noticed his back end looks smoother now and the fur is a lot coarser. He looks more cocker than poo at the moment, and I think as time goes by he will look more like a spaniel. I don’t mind at all though. I love a cocker spaniel. I was worried that it is something to do with him having worms recently. Worried that he has lost nutrients and that is why his coat is drier. I’m sure it’s nothing to do with that though. Probably just a coincidence.

Snoopdogowner · 09/12/2019 11:54

@heatseeker14 my cockapoo is 31 weeks and the biting and barking is particularly bad at the moment! Oh and he loves eating the xmas tree! Ffs!!! Only another 2.5 years of this then!

fortifiedwithtea · 09/12/2019 15:29

Fortifiedpup is being a real shit today. Goes out to the garden on every waking, before food and after food. Not a single wee or poo in the garden today. And to add insult to injury will only wee on the laminated floor. But will poo on the pads. So she has plenty of plenty of available pads to wee on, she just isn’t.

DeathByPuppy · 09/12/2019 16:16

Mine goes apeshit at pads, shreds them in seconds Hmm.

Ledkr · 09/12/2019 16:33

Mine is pretty good and mostly goes outside but the endless watching and standing in the cold is doing my head in.
Today I noticed she'd not weed all night but had done a poo under the table and DD said she took her out this morning and she didn't go?
I took her again but no joy.
I popped into work for an hour and then came back and still a dry puppy pad.
Sat on the sofa with my lap top to work and realised she'd pissed it right through 😠 I've washed the cover and the underneath but Jesus it's bloody revolting and I don't want my house to stink of dog pee.

Ledkr · 09/12/2019 16:34

I'm I'll today as well and seen to be getting a cold but I'd rather go to work than try to be I'll here whilst on pee and poo watch

talia66 · 09/12/2019 17:36

@Ledkr when you take her out is she on a lead? For some reason we have a much higher success rate with our puppy if we take him in the garden on the lead.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 09/12/2019 17:45

Ledkr could you leave your puppy in the crate or contained to one place when you go out?

I still wouldn't trust our puppy (6 month old) in the living room when I'm out!! Now I leave him in the hallway/kitchen which is hard floor and there isn't much he could damage!! When he was younger he was only ever left in the crate.

BoysRule · 09/12/2019 18:15

It's encouraging to hear that the biting calms down. It is a big problem here with our 9 week old terrier. He gets into a crazed state and just won't leave us alone - I have resorted to putting him into the crate as there is nothing else we can do with him. I really don't like doing it though.

I think he is teething as he is chewing everything constantly, we have also found around 7 little teeth on the floor - he has loads of chew toys but loses interest in them after a few minutes and comes back to our feet or furniture.

Ledkr - I too am really fed up of standing in the cold on poo and wee watch. It feels endless. I am taking him out pretty much every half an hour at the moment - I have never spent so much time in my garden. The success rate is still fairly low though.

I have to keep positive by keeping in mind that we really wanted a dog - this puppy phase is just something to get through. With a lot of wine.

Ledkr · 09/12/2019 20:05

She does go on the lead sometimes but she's pretty consistent with it mostly as long as we watch her and take her often.
The prob was my youngest didnt take her straight out this morning and she hadn't had a wee all night.
She sleeps in her crate all night but I dont shut the door I just shut her in the kitchen with one puppy pad which she occasionally uses .
She was in frenzied bite mode today too but she's tiny so not much of a problem.
I'm I'll today and I came home early and it really struck me how much my life has changed as I couldn't even rest up and nurse my cold.

DeathByPuppy · 09/12/2019 20:21

This time of year is not ideal to have a young, unhousetrained puppy, I agree. It is bloody cold, dark, rainy and windy.

Nettleskeins · 09/12/2019 21:04

She may use the sofa again be warned! For now I.would advise a waterproof layer between a throw and sofa. One of those sheets.that protect beds perhaps? My pup still has a deathwish for a certain corner of carpet upstairs (he isnt often upstairs) hopefully he will think sofa equals bed and not sully.it again

Spotty528 · 09/12/2019 21:15

Here’s a question for you all-do your puppies go to bed wide awake or do you wait for them to be sleepy?

We’ve got into a routine of puppy snoozing on DH lap in the evening then he’s put in his pen after a quick wee but he’s half asleep.

This evening he was wide awake as DS was playing with him. Put him in his pen and all hell broke loose, jumping against the pen and howling. We had to get him back out and DH settled him o his lap. He’s back in there now and we’re anxiously waiting to see if he starts stressing again.

DeathByPuppy · 09/12/2019 21:38

Night time is our bad time, so I can’t give any useful advice in that department @Spotty528 Sad.

My little darling [gritted teeth] goes to bed awake and settles very well but that’s with DH or me sleeping in the same room as him (the kitchen). This needs to stop, so we’re restarting the tough love, crating at night with DH and I sleeping together in our own bed. I hate it but I need to break this thing. He’s been with us over week now and is really well settled. However, DH and I are absolutely knackered husks. DH’s back is buggered his split shifts on the kitchen sofa and I’m just perma-knackered and can’t think straight for the lack of sleep.

DeathByPuppy · 09/12/2019 21:42

Should clarify that ‘I hate it’ because he will cry and make a fuss. It won’t be pleasant and I don’t want to stress him (or us). That said, I do worry that we’re storing up trouble by extending the sleeping with him, in terms of nighttime separation anxiety.

Gahhhhhhhhh

Snufflesdog · 09/12/2019 21:57

We started out pulling the sofa bed mattress downstairs
Did about a week
We would get her to start snoozing on us then pop her in the crate

Instead now, I think she’s a bit more settled and secure so it’s easier, but we take her out for a last wee, and pop some ‘bedtime biscuits’ in her crate, and she takes herself off there once she’s ready now and we shut the gate and go to our bed and she goes straight off to sleep.

Please don’t mistake this for smugness - we’ve got lots of other things absolutely not sorted at all, but hope it gives you some hope!!

Ledkr · 09/12/2019 21:59

My pup has always been good at night as she was slightly older when we got her and her owner had started good habits.
She usually has a snoozy period with us around then goes into her open crate at 10.
Last night we were up later and she just couldn't settle. She was whining and pacing and we couldn't do a thing with her. So when we stood up to get ready to go to bed and she shot into her crate. I think she had been waiting to go to bed Grin

DeathByPuppy · 09/12/2019 22:16

No, positive stories are useful to hear, @Snufflesdog
