Awww @Girliefriendlikescake he's some dote! Ours is a Jack Russell cross. The spca ask that we have him neutered at 6 months. I'll give them a ring and see if they mind me leaving it a while longer. He hasn't a chance of escape though he is in love with the dog next door (in a playful way of course-for now!)

Mental as he is, I'm so grateful to him for helping get us through the heartache of losing our last fella. Not a day goes by without one of us having a cry over him. Getting him was definitely the right thing to do in our case though there are days where I'd love a bit of peace!

Grassynoel · 07/10/2019 19:51

Just posted that and realised the little demon has done a nice healthy poo behind my chair whilst I was typing! Oh the joys!!

ClownsandCowboys · 07/10/2019 22:22

Aw, cute pup. Tbf, doing anything in this household is hard work. DH and dd being autistic means we are often limited/things take longet/are harder or impossible. Some days getting to school (not necessarily on time!) is the greatest achievement! So adding a puppy was never going to be simple.

A few accidents today, but she's in Dh's care and he can't multi-task (not a man jibe, he lacks the executive function) and can't read her body language. Turns out dog body language is just as hard to read as human.

First puppy class tomorrow night.

Imjustagirlwhobakes · 08/10/2019 16:10

Hi everyone, can I join you? I have a 15 week old puppy who I love but she is hard work. She just doesn't seem to be getting toilet training at all which is causing me a lot of anxiety as she comes to work with me and I don't want her weeing all over the carpet in the office. I feel like I'm outside with her more often than I am sat at my desk.

In the nicest way possible I am so relieved to read that I'm not the only one struggling with the early mornings and not being able to go to bed earlier as I need to take her out for a last wee and poo before bed! It's just me at home so I don't have anyone to share the responsibilities with.

I'm just hoping that in 12 months time it will all be worth it

BiteyMcBiteFace · 08/10/2019 16:33

Biteypup is 5 months and 1 week old tomorrow. Where has that time gone?!? We have conquered the biting - yay! and seem to be getting there with the cat (fingers crossed), as long as Biteypup isn't too tired or excited by the doorbell Hmm I still wouldn't trust her out in the garden not to chase though Sad

I enrolled in some extra outdoor training classes this Friday and then I checked the weather forecast Shock Hopefully they will postpone if it's as bad as they say. This week is the last of our novice training course and apaprently there will be a competition. I have a feeling I know where we will come Blush

I hope you're first puppy training class is helpful ClownsandCowboys

Cute pup pic Girliefriendlikescake I wish Biteypup would cuddle on the sofa like that Sad

BiteyMcBiteFace · 08/10/2019 16:36

Forgot to add, I have been sifting through poop since Saturday trying to locate an earring that Biteypup pulled from my ear whilst bouncing on me Confused

Not sure whether she swallowed it, or it's bounced off somewhere, but I haven't found it yet Hmm I've pulled all the furniture out and hunted high and low, but no sign of it in the house, or poop yet Shock

SunnyUpNorth · 08/10/2019 20:13

@BiteyMcBiteFace oh the things we find ourselves doing, good luck with the poo sieving!!

Things plodding along here. Sunnypup is now 21 weeks and around 8kg. He is so lovely, I’m totally smitten. But he is very stinky and still likes waking up very early. Sometimes has a penchant for a middle of the night poo too which I’m hoping he will grow out of soon.

Think I’ve been slightly over feeding him. I’d been upping the kibble by 25g every time he goes up a kg which I thought was what it indicated on the guide. But think it’s too much.

Still haven’t really left him for more than an hour and a half but I need to start working on that. I’m thinking of leaving him uncrated, I usually have him in the crate for longer stints but I think he gets bored once he has woken up.

Toileting generally going really well. He uses the bells a lot of the time now and very rarely has an accident.

We are going away next week and in laws were going to mind him but have now decided it’s a bit restrictive (think the early mornings put them off!). We also had Thomas cook flights so have had to change plans slightly and will now have to leave him with a boarder lady for 5 nights 😬😬😬

I’ve been trying to settle him in with someone else but I’ve some reservations so meeting another lady this Saturday who sounds lovely. He has never been away from us overnight though so I have no idea how this will work!!!

Snoopdogowner · 08/10/2019 21:15

We are also doing a night with boarder for pup this weekend and I'm hoping it will all be fine. I plan on shampooing carpets and washing dog bedding and the throws on the sofa! No doubt I'll be wide awake regardless from 5am 🙄

ClownsandCowboys · 08/10/2019 21:53

Puppy class went really well, Clownpup is the youngest, but did really well. Some of the puppies are breeds that are notoriously difficult to train. She was exhausted aftwards and completely zonked out!

She now weighs 6.4kg at 9 weeks, so she's gained a kg in just over a week!

She slept through last night, but was up at 5.30am 😴

Keepsmiling1 · 08/10/2019 22:24

Well I never thought I would say this but SmileyPup is winning me over!! He is almost 15 weeks and is such a cutie. Don't get me wrong, he is still quite bitey and still has accidents inside but they are getting fewer and I am enjoying my time with him more. I really enjoy puppy classes and doing training with him at home. We leave him around 3.5 hours of a morning while I'm in work and he seems to be coping well so far (I have a camera on him). He has the run of the back room/kitchen and we leave the tv on for him.

He's still a bit reluctant on walks (although he loves the beach!) but loves playing tug and running after his toys. I worry about him when I'm not there so I think that's a good sign.

Can I ask what your days look like in terms of training/playing/leaving them to entertain themselves? I took him out for a walk tonight and we got back just after 7pm. He has pretty much been lying around since then but then I feel guilty we haven't been 'doing' anything. He still spends most of his time in the back room and kitchen (until he is fully house trained!) or our bedroom and I worry that he must be bored of the same space. I don't know if that's just me putting human emotions on him though!

Girliefriendlikescake · 08/10/2019 22:39

Keep no two days look the same atm! Today dpup was at doggy day care so he has had a very busy day there, Ystd he went into work with my mum.

Eventually the plan will be that dpup will be left mornings and afternoons with a dog walker popping in at lunchtime on the days I'm out all day. I don't think that will be until after Christmas though, until then it is patching together puppy care!

We normally walk him in the evening at some point, am feeling quite sad about the dark evenings though 🙁 def makes walking him less enjoyable.

Dd does all the training 😬 it's his last puppy class tomorrow and I'm trying to work out what to do with him next. The next step up puppy class is very expensive so can't afford that but there are some other training classes that I wondered if he could do. Will enquire tomorrow.

josben · 08/10/2019 23:05

We are picking up our new cocker spaniel puppy soon, please can you tell me the essentials we should get for when he arrives?
TIA

Girliefriendlikescake · 09/10/2019 12:15

Jos I would say essentials are a crate (if you chose to use one) for us it made night times and leaving him for short periods during the day much easier.

A dog bed and blanket

Food and bowls

Toys and things they can chew

A decent enzyme based cleaner for inevitable puddles on the carpet and lots of kitchen roll!

Umm that's all I can think of, things like lead, collar, harness you're better off getting once you have the puppy imo as you will see what sizes you need.

BiteyMcBiteFace · 09/10/2019 16:32

Still no sign of the earring Hmm Think I will turn the bedroom upside down at the weekend and drag all the furniture out and hoover everywhere to see if it is lurking somewhere on the floor.

Keepsmiling1 We're up at around 7.15am, breakfast and then a walk at about 8am. Biteypup is back in bed just after 9am for a couple of hours and then up until I go to work at 12.45pm. She then sleeps for several hours whilst DH works from home and he gets her up around 4ish and I get home about 5.45pm. She has tea and we go for another walk around 6.15pm and then home for our tea. If she seems tired and grouchy then she'll have a nap in her crate for an hour and then come in the lounge with a chew for a while, until she takes herself back into the kitchen for some more sleep. I tend to do most of my training stuff whilst out on the walks, but I will add in a few sits, downs, stays, waits etc., at home as part of our daily routine.

After our 1-2-1 training session I am more aware of not trying to 'entertain' her the entire time she's awake. The trainer said she was being over stimulated and I should 'just let her be' more and not worry that she may be bored. It helps them settle apparently. She is much less of a live wire since I heeded her advice, so I wouldn't be too worried that you need to be 'doing' stuff all the time. Biteypup spends 90% of her time in our large kitchen/diner and only really comes into the lounge in the evening. Whenever she's finished her chew, or got bored of our company in the evening she seems to gravitate back to the kitchen anyway, so I guess that's where she feels happiest to sleep. I would like a dog who snuggles up with me of an evening and I hope that she will change her mind as she grows up, but it's not a big deal.

I took her for her weigh in today and she's just under 19kg Shock

Keepsmiling1 · 09/10/2019 20:52

@BiteyMcBiteFace that's really good advice. That's what I'm finding difficult at the moment - the balance between leaving him to entertain himself and playing with him. I do some work at home in the afternoons and I sit in the same room as him but sometimes he barks to get my attention. I have been ignoring him because I don't want him to think him barking gets him what he wants - is that the right thing?

He has discovered bull's pizzles and absolutely loves them!! He hasn't sat so still and in one place since we got him!

heatseeker14 · 09/10/2019 21:29

Perhaps that’s where we are going wrong @BiteyMcBiteFace. Our boy goes absolutely crazy in the evening for about 40 minutes. Ultra bitey mode initiated! His eyes change completely at this time of night. Reminds me of the shark in Finding Nemo Grin Perhaps we need to let him mooch about more and entertain himself. Our kids always decide to go crazy with him in the evening. I want to let our pup burn his energy without going completely bonkers! I’m always the one telling everyone to calm down. Such a spoilsport!

heatseeker14 · 09/10/2019 21:33

@Keepsmiling1 bull’s pizzles?! I’ve not heard about these! Sounds like something I need to get for his lordship.

Girliefriendlikescake · 09/10/2019 22:16

Heat I think over tiredness kicks in in the evenings, our puppy was a nightmare last night we call him 'devil dog' when he gets like that. Eventually I put him in the crate, he cried for a bit but did then settle and sleep.

Here's a pic I took this morning of him looking very angelic 🙄😁

BiteyMcBiteFace · 09/10/2019 22:35

Trainer said definitely ignore barking and demanding attention type behaviour, but make sure you reward calmness and settled behaviour with fuss and praise. Apparently this will teach them what behaviour to offer to get the attention from you. That's what the expert said anyway, so that's what we're doing!

SunnyUpNorth · 09/10/2019 23:20

Sunnypup has his first pizzle today too! Took him a good while but he demolished the whole thing. Pretty gross though 🤮

smoresmores · 09/10/2019 23:22

Glad to have found the thread, whippet puppy who is 11w on the weekend and has been with us for 3 weeks. Really struggling at the moment.

Keepsmiling1 · 10/10/2019 06:56

@SunnyUpNorth they smell absolutely awful don't they!! How often can they have them? It took SmileyPup a few days to eat one and I'm not sure if it's something he can have every day or just as a treat?

Alsohuman · 10/10/2019 09:12

@smoresmores, our puppies are twins! Whippets are so beautiful.

Imjustagirlwhobakes · 10/10/2019 12:57

My dog trainer sells all natural dog treats including pizzles and the smell from some of them is stomach turning! Although, puppy thinks the smellier the better! Furry rabbit ears seem to be a favourite at the moment, they don't smell and are a natural wormer apparently...

Ridusofyourstupidity · 10/10/2019 14:05

Hope is 10 weeks old now, weighing 10.6kg. She’s very bitey/growly still and we’re definitely going to need a little guidance from our trainer as she’s started humping me Hmm

But she’s beautiful and I love her.
