JRT with very itchy bottom

Our 6 yr old JRT periodically has a very itchy bottom and presents his back end for us to rub, scratch. His anal glands have been emptied, so that's not it. The vet said it was an allergy and prescribed Apoquel which does help, but we are wondering if his diet is the problem. He is fed mainly on boiled chicken mixed with mashed mixed veg and rice. He had collitis and this food keeps him settled. His poop is normal. He sometimes has a raw bone. He also sometimes has chicken and raw hide chews, Baker's moist meaty chunks, pouches of Pedigree Vital in gravy. I'd like to hear from anyone with experience of this problems or solutions to suggest. He is a bright energetic typical Jack. This is he.

Is he worked regularly?

We had a terrier with an allergy we could never pin down whose back end got so itchy she would pull out the fur. Half a Piriton for life kept it completely under control, so that might be worth a try.

Our Ndn has a dog who was constantly scratching ... turns out an allergy to chicken is quite common and that's what they were feeding her for snacks all the time. They removed chicken from the diet and ddog is very much improved

We’ve had this with our dog, a cavalier, fairly recently. He was on periton but we were advised to try dog food without msg. We were stunned to find how many dog food and treats contain msg. He is now 100% raw and it seems to be working. I would have a look at dropping the Pedigree. I think Butchers is alright. Otherwise like others have suggested, trying an exclusion diet to see what his triggers are might help.

Thank you for the helpful suggestions, we are getting some piriton today to see how he gets on with it is Apoquel is so expensive. He eats mainly boiled chicken but recently had some duck strip treats and has had a flare up since then. Have thought about a raw diet and have thought about excluding chicken. Those who feed a raw diet, what does it consist of please

I get Natures Menu. It comes in frozen cubes, then depending on size of dog, you give them a number of defrosted cubes per day. If you go on their website, you find your nearest stockist.

I just switched the terrier to a better-quality kibble and dosed her with Piriton and she was fine for the next 10 or 11 years, till she was PTS at 15.

We have a 14 yo terrier, always had a dicky tummy on canned food (we inherited him from family when he was about 9) and he is a million times better on nature's menu frozen cubes. Non itchy, smells less, firmer poo (Sorry!) Lots of energy still, dashes around like a 3 year old when out on walks. Easy to feed, 10 mins on defrost in micro for 8 or 9 cubes twice a day.
