Kong question!

Hi, sorry if this has been done before but what do you put in your dog’s kong?

We also have a lick mat and ideas of what to put on that would be good too. We’ve tried small blobs of peanut butter, primula, squashed up strawberry and banana. Any variations would be great.
TIA

We put peanut butter in it and freeze it.
It then lasts longer and our dog loves it.

Putanotherwashon · 07/09/2019 16:06

Do you totally fill it with peanut butter?

I squash it into all the sides and down the bottom but leave a little space for her tongue to get in.

missbattenburg · 07/09/2019 16:11

Almost anything I find in the fridge...

e.g. I throw a few frozen peas or kibbles in the bottom, then spoon a bit of cottage cheese in, then maybe a spoon of normal wet dog food, then a bit of Sunday's apple sauce. Then I plug the hole with peanut butter and usually stick a treat in the peanut butter (e.g. a meat chew) so it looks like a flake Grin

Or I might use squeezy cheese, or little cheese chunks, or a bit of mashed potato left over from dinner, or a few chhunks of roast meat. That kind of thing.

I do them all at once then put them in the freezer and take them out when needed.

I tried peanut butter but my rescue dog had zero interest. Never liked it. He would sometimes be ok with some treats or his meaty dog food. But no interest in cheese, meat etc. In fact he couldn't really be bothered with the kong at all! cry.

Just one thing I’ve been told about the kongs

Put a straw all the way through before you fill it and freeze it.

That way the hole at the top is still open, and your dog won’t get their tongue stuck with the suction.

Obviously remove the straw before giving to dog Grin

I bash up some dog biscuits and mix it with natural yogurt then freeze

Cyberworrier · 07/09/2019 18:25

Fat free cottage cheese, with some grated carrot or apple sometimes.

Parkandride · 07/09/2019 18:28

Gosh everything: plain yogurt, apple sauce, gravy, peanut butter, meat paste, baby food purees, bone broth - just sense check for anything not dog friendly : onion, xylitol etc

Putanotherwashon · 07/09/2019 20:36

Thanks for all those fab ideas, my puppy is in for some treats x

I gave my dog a kong today and worried he has hurt his mouth on it. He was going at it so vigorously I took it away and later on he yelped when he was playing with another toy but he won’t let me look in his mouth!
I would just say keep an eye on your dog with it

Keepsmiling1 · 07/09/2019 21:57

Can they have normal natural yoghurt? Where do you get meat pastes? I am trying to find some nice things to entice my pup!

Chimpd0g · 08/09/2019 09:38

ooh thanks for all the ideas. Not using mine as much bec ddog on diet, so peanut butter us out for now.

btw what size kong for a mini schnauzer? (we have the smallest one)

Chimpd0g · 08/09/2019 09:39

she's 9.4 kilos (trying to get her down to 9)

nonsenceagain · 10/09/2019 20:52

Anything, including pasta, frozen green beans and grated cheese.

sanityisamyth · 10/09/2019 20:56

I read something about the composition of peanut butter. Be careful it doesn't contain xylitol as it's poisonous.

abbey44 · 10/09/2019 21:09

I use a lot of the other fillings mentioned, and also cheap liver (pigs' liver is good) cooked Andy the new blitzed in the food processor to stuff into the kong with kibble and whatever else, then frozen. Keeps my dog happy for ages.

It is pretty disgusting to make though, so when I do it, I make lots so I don't have to do it too often. I also keep those old hollow bones to stuff with the liver paste and freeze them too for treats.

abbey44 · 10/09/2019 21:11

and not Andy. I have no idea where Andy came from Confused
