Disgusting smelly dog

My sweet little granddog has been away for a few weeks as his family was traveling, and so were we. He flew up to stay with DDIL's parents. He is so loved everyone wants him.

He just got back today. DH and DGD picked him up from the airport.

He absolutely stinks of cigarette smoke and some horrible perfume, presumably to cover up the smoke smell. He has been with a very heavy smoker for over three weeks.

I feel very worried about him having inhaled so much second hand smoke. I have just given him a bath so hopefully he won't stink any more. I think though I may have to bathe him twice as he is lying on my lap and is still a bit whiffy.

Any ideas as to what sort of dog shampoo will get out the stench? He has a poodle type coat. I have some Johnson's baby shampoo I could try. Would that harm him? I use a good dog shampoo mostly.

Don't use human shampoo, it won't harm him but it's really not suitable for dogs' skin and coat.

A good quality dog shampoo is far better for them. I very rarely bathe my dog so can't really recommend anything - sorry, I know that's not helpful.

In your shoes I'd google 'best dog shampoos' and have a look at what's out there.

Poor little thing, second hand smoke is just as bad for animals as it is for people.

Thank you. I have really good dog shampoo. I have just been brushing him a bit and my hands smell smokey. I think he is going to the groomer next week which should take care of the rest of the smell. I cannot believe it was so bad and so persistent. DIL's Mother is not very well and she smokes in the house.

Yes, I know smoke is bad for dogs too.I hope it was short term enough not to do much damage.

Love the little guy to bits. He came over every day when I was recovering from thyroid surgery. He would race in the front door and make a flying leap into my lap.

I've got a friend who smokes heavily - house is disgusting - and her little dog was recently diagnosed with lung disease. She seemed surprised when the vet told her that smoking was almost certainly a significant cause.

I have a (fostered) rescue parrot who lived with chainsmokers for 6 years and arrived with slimy brown-coloured feathers and was pulling feathers out and twitching every now and then. The owners were very fond of him but were no longer able to care for him due to ill health, I discovered. After a few weeks (in my smoke-free home and with lots of warm showers) he stopped pulling at his feathers and started to grow new ones. It turned out that the slimy brown was tar and he was really brilliantly coloured green, two-tone grey, yellow and orange. He is a beauty. He never plucks his feathers now and is a completely different-looking bird. I've had him 8 years now so hopefully he won't suffer any other effects from being a passive smoker for 6 years before.

I use this for my dogs, it’s a lovely smell. Amazon do it and pets at home I think.

Aw nice to hear he's so loved! I'd probably just leave it and hope he airs out and if not the groomers will hopefully get rid of it.

I know that tomato ketchup is recommended for getting out the stink of fox poo - you rub it in, then shampoo out - might that help?

Thank so much everyone. He is now smelling like his sweet old self. I had cuddled him when he first arrived and the smoke smell that remained was on me!

He is my granddog because he belongs to my son's family. But he and I are close buddies and I spend time with him most weekdays when grandkids are at school and their Mom and Dad are at work. He lives just a short walk away. He loves to come to our place, and dashes in to the bowl I keep his toys in and always gets out his little lambchop toy for a good play.

At the risk of being told off for having any thing to do with a poodle cross, he is a Maltese/poodle cross and the smartest, best natured dog I have ever had. He absolutely loves people, especially children. He used to go with DH to meet our granddaughter at primary school and all the kids would run over to say hi to him. He thought he was in heaven.

I really wish he didn't have the smoke exposure, but he is not mine to make that call as it is DIL's Mother who is very ill.

The ketchup is a good suggestion. We have skunks where I live and if a dog gets skunked tomato juice is supposed to work.
