Ok so we picked up the pup...

...now what?!! We managed the two hour drive with no problems. The chap we got her from hadn’t fed her so she wasn’t sick or anything.

We got home and fed her at 12. She’s had a pee and a poo outside, a couple of little naps and a few mad moments.
Do I need to get two more meals inside her today or shall I just give her tea and write breakfast off?
Am hoping to get her into a routine of early (6ish) breakfast, 12ish lunch and then 6ish tea. Does that sound ok? She’s 8 weeks and a cocker spaniel.
I like to go to bed no later than 10. Will that be long enough since her tea?

Did he tells you when she eats currently? It'll be fine overnight - better to feed her at 6 than wait til 9 and chance her pooping in the house!

Yes, we could do without poops in the house. She’s just gone and got herself into her bed. She’s soooo cute. Can’t imagine how we’re going to get her into any kind of normal life ever again.

10 May be right time for last feed ( I think we did 10.30) but the breeder should have told you the times he fed her so you can gently adjust them. 10 o'clock bedtime may be too early for puppy to go overnight especially first few nights. I think we did midnight and then up at 6 for first few weeks. Then gradually extended nights. Are you crate training? That seems to help them be dry quite quickly. Very cute btw

It will vary when she is likely to poo but in a few days you will get to know when it's likely. As a puppy BiteyDog would tend to poo an hour or so after a meal but not always.

We are early risers and early to bed so we fed our last meal early. I am trying to remember how many we did. I think for the first few days we did four meals (it's a few years ago but I am sure the breeder did four when we picked him up) then cut it down to three.

Our spaniel is now 2 but we had this routine

6.30 - get up, wee outside, breakfast
Outside every 15/20 mins for a wee throughout the day
12/1 lunch
Again out every 15/20mins
6pm dinner
8pm Settle down time, no going mad but light playing
10pm bed in crate
12.30/1 outside wee
4am outside wee
Again 6.30 up

Hope this helps. We removed the 4am +1am and made us 2 am after a couple of weeks. Got up at 2am for around a month 🤞🏼 Good luck

Yes I’m all ready for taking her out in the night. Although some seem to say wait til she wakes me up and others say set an alarm and wake her up. Which would be best? Like you @BiteyShark we are early to bed early to rise and so that’s our eventual aim.

That’s very helpful @Youngdoginthevillage. Today we got home around 12 with her and have pretty much spent all day outside waiting for her to wee. First one was around 2, next around 4 with a little dribble on her blanket in between. It’s hard to know how long to stay out for. As I say the first was 2 hours!!

With our youngest ( now age 14 months) we always got him outside straight after food and trained him to poo on command. It seemed to work so now night and morning he is popped out and does a poo! Useful. As to setting an alarm or waiting for him I would ask the person you got him from what they did and try to gently adjust that to what suits you. Our breeder got up at 6 and put them out for a wee and then went back to bed unTIL 7.30! We would get up at 6 and then 6.15 and then 6.30 etc u TIL it was when we would get up ( but soemdays my husband is up at 5 whic buggered it up). It was relatively short time before ours was safe all night ( so from 11.30 - 6.30 and then we extended it hardy).

Yes we did 4 meals at firs then cut to three and now it's still 2

We went with whenever there was a break on the TV, otherwise after every drink, every play and every nap. They can hold it in much longer than 20 mins, but getting toileting 100% is easier if they’re being praised every time they wee outside, and ignoring it inside, the more times to praise the better. They also won’t wet in their own beds, so keep the entire crate bedded and don’t leave water over night in there, let them have a drink when they come out for wees. Once you’ve nailed toileting and there’s no frequent accidents , take out for wee every hour or so :)
The tiny puppy stage is so hard but goes by so so quick and they’re adorable!

I tell you what you should do, OP. You should give her to me. She is far too cute for your own good. I will cuddle and smooch her all day long and hand her back when she is a teenage nightmare.

You don't HAVE to take a puppy out to pee in the middle of the night, provided you don't mind clearing up in the morning. Ours tend to be largely housetrained within about 6 weeks, and I'd rather that than the broken nights.

Best advice we got was to use a cat collar with a bell on it. When they start to stir, you'll hear the bell provided you're close by. Straight out as soon as you hear it.

We always just leave food (dry food, not wet) out all day and let them eat as they like. Works well so long as it's not a lab :-) Our two generally eat two or three times a day. They're 8 and 9 now.

Did they give you any food? We got enough for two weeks so we could transfer over slowly.

With mine we leave dry food out constantly. Wet twice a day, although that tends to be hit and miss and we only do so if he ate the previous meal. Mine is a breed known for picky eating though.

I also mat trained mine in the early days. Yes it probably made the process longer but for us it had advantages. Even now in an emergency with no outside access he will use the mat.
