Greyhound not fancying walks

About 10 days ago we adopted a retired racer and he has fitted into the family beautifully. House trained, very calm and friendly- already feels like we've had him ages. He's our fourth dog, but the other three (all deceased) were retrievers and a lurcher cross, so we're used to dogs that get very excited about walks.

Flash only has short walks and even these seem to tire him out (20 mins or so twice a day). Yesterday it was very warm so I waited until evening to take him out and he just wouldn't get off the sofa- simply looked at me even when I showed him his muzzle and lead. I tried again about an hour later when it was noticeably cooler but he still wouldn't get up. He is eating, toileting and all the rest quite happily trotting in and out of the gardenand raced outside when it was dark to warn off a fox, so I guess not a health issue like pain or sickness.

Today he was happy to go out but did slow down on the way home- again it's a warm day when the sun is out.

So, is it normal for a greyhound to refuse a walk if it's hot for them or otherwise uncomfortable weather? And will their health, fitness or temperament suffer if they occasionally don't have a walk by choice?

In his favourite position in his favourite place 😂

iklboo · 18/07/2019 18:45

The only time our old girl got excited was when we went to the beach. Otherwise it was like trying to drag a teenager round B&Q getting her out.

iklboo · 18/07/2019 18:47

This was when DS was little. She adored him. Sadly lost her 10 years ago, but she was nearly 15.

This is mine. She gets the train to work with me quite often. She loves it (that's her excited face, incase you can't tell).

My whippet doesn't like walking if damp, too hot, raining, too cold.. sometimes he just switches off and decides the sofa is his for the day. It's a sight hound thing! They're not dogs

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/07/2019 08:46

My lovely sighthound will only go out if it’s not too cold, not too hot, not too wet, not too windy....getting the balance right can be tricky!

Oberonunder · 23/07/2019 09:17

I am just here for the pictures. More please!

Frouby · 23/07/2019 09:26

My whippet loves walkies.

If it's not too hot and not too cold.
If it's definitely not raining or have rained.
Definetly, definetly not in snow or frost.
If it's with the right person ie me or DH. Not dd, or ndns lad who loves her.
If it's not to the allotment because she doesn't like the wood chipped paths.
As long as there isn't a roast chicken cooking at home, because someone might eat her scraps.

She didn't fancy one yesterday and won't today or tomorrow or Thursday I bet. She is alternating basking in the sun, then comes inside to cool down and utilise the sofa, especially as the throws are freshly washed.

She likes freshly washed throws. I have to fight with her to get them back on the couch as she tries to wrap herself up in them while I am straightening them. She's been known to mug me at the tumble dryer for clean bedding while it's still warm.

They are definitely sensitive.

Not today thank-you.

79andnotout · 23/07/2019 10:18

loving the pics :)

kelper · 23/07/2019 14:26

My whippet is currently lying on the clean washing I'm trying to sort. She absolutely does not want to walk anywhere.
As long as it isn't raining, isn't too cold, too hot, too dark, too light, she enjoys a walk ;)

Greys should be renamed, Goldilocks is more fitting I think.

They are all beauties and this thread has been great. Flash is definitely coming out of his shell now...

Yesterday he grabbed a pound of sausages off the counter and ran around the living room with me chasing while he ate them, including the clingfilm they were wrapped in. Vet fully booked so I had to use hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting- thankfully it worked just as they said it would. Then he went into the garden for a pee at 4am and found a hedgehog! So I had to drag him back inside and use a towel to transfer tightly curled creature right under a hedge where dog can't reach.

His mouth seems to be okay, but will be keeping a close eye. All of this marked the one month anniversary of him coming home with us!

He's a character OP. Hope his mouth is ok after hedgehog incident.

My girl used to mooch around and stick her snout into people's cups of tea and drink the lot. We had to keep an eye on her when we had a brew otherwise you'd suddenly hear 'slurp, slurp, slurp'.

SilverDragonfly1 · 05/08/2019 06:39

His mouth is fine and we now have a plastic box with lid for defrosting purposes!

He drinks tea too! Those muzzles fit beautifully into cups. He also tried sticking his tongue into a bottle of beer- didn't get any but funnily enough my husband didn't fancy it after that.

I grew up with greyhounds and never heard of them not wanting a walk

I agree with this. I have ever had a greyhound that didn't enjoy walks. Put the lead on and out the door, don't wait for the dog to come up to you and ask.

SilverDragonfly1 · 12/08/2019 18:55

He was lying on his bed refusing to move at the time... but now it's cooler and he is used to walks, he gets very excited as soon as he sees his harness!

My greyhound absolutely hates the hot weather - she's the "hottest" dog I've ever met and during the recent heatwaves I just left the side door open so she could take herself out for a wee and I took her out just long enough to have a poo morning and evening.

RuthW · 14/08/2019 12:17

You are wearing him out. 20 mins walk and both of mine sleep til teatime.

RuthW · 14/08/2019 12:17

Oh and they don't like going out in heat, rain, snow, wind, cold ......

RuthW · 14/08/2019 12:23

Monty and Betsy say hello. This was taken during the one hour in 24 they are awake.
