Good cars for dogs

Hello we are thinking of getting a new car as one of ours has just about had it. Our main car is a 3 door corsa which is lovely but not working very well when we take our 2 springers out for the day.

We are thinking of getting one that's more dog friendly - not necessarily too big though - but perhaps where we can get the dogs in the back/boot and it won't matter if they are wet from the beach or muddy from walks.

Any recommendations anyone please? 🐶🐶 thanks

I have a springer and a Tiguan - which works great. Plenty of boot space and the car is very comfy.

I also looked at the Passat and Golf estates as they have loooaaads of boot space. Plenty for the dog and all luggage etc.

In the end I decided the Passat wheelbase was too long and I was already changing from a Golf so it seemed a waste to spend ££ and it not be any different at all for me in the front .

Just some suggestions.

I have a Touran, it’s not a huge car but has good boot space for dogs.

Dunno, I have a Renault Grand Scenic and 3 kids and a big dog, & it's struggle to get us & all the crap in for a day out...

I have a Skoda Octavia estate with the estate exclusively for the dog. Guard up, boot liner, non spill water bowl, ruff tuff bed and shaded glass on sides.The boot highest and lowers to allow us to put his crate and sack of food in if we go away.
My has a hybrid XC90 which is technically bigger but nowhere near as practical.

We have had a look at a few and still can't decide because a lot of the boots seem really high of the ground so will be difficult in a few years when our eldest dog is deemed old...wondering if an estate is the way forward :)

We have a Peugeot 308 sw estate. Loads of room..massive boot but not high up. Love it.

We have an outlander, lots of room for the dogs, it's lovely to drive and quite good on diesel.

Skoda Yeti, not a huge car but quite spacious

If you like a car and the boot is a bit high, consider getting a dog ramp. I'm looking for one but it needs to take a decent weight (dogs are c. 40kg) and those indeeds are expensive.

Retriever and Lab here. We've had VW Passat estate, Mondeo, Golf, BMW, Mercedes C220 all estates.
Toyota Rav 4 and Ford Kuga.
All excellent dog cars. I would say the Mercedes has the lowest boot for dogs jumping in.

Forgot to say - have a Mercedes ML. It's big but can only have two dogs in the boot unless it's a short journey. The dogs are two Rotties and a GSD. One goes on the back seat with a harness on. Have considered dropping all the seats and moving the guard to just behind the front seats, but not sure that's a good plan in the event of a crash, i.e. a combined weight of approx 110kg plus impact force hitting the guard - not good for the dogs or for us.

This is a question I wanted to ask too - I need to change my car soon plus we're getting a retriever in the coming weeks and we plan on a few long trips down to Cornwall with two kids and the dog in tow, plus luggage. Tempted by the Volvo XC60 but still pondering. Great ideas on here, thanks!

We have a Vauxhall Astra estate which easily fits our lab x GSD, big bag of food, bed etc. As well as a huge duffel bag in the angle of the back of the seats. We regularly drive to Cornwall with the dog in the boot but we do have a roof box to fit all the kids' stuff, wellies, rain gear, beach tent etc. Only problem is because it was super cheap the engine is only 1.2L so it labours a little on hills with the dog, the whole family and the roofbox so get a bigger engine if you can.

I have a 500L. Not seen as particularly cool but absolutely love mine and there's bags of room for the dog. The boot has a recess too so you can put luggage underneath and the dog on top of the boot shelf above. The rear seats also slide backwards and forwards, and can be reclined backwards and forwards too so you can adjust the space in the boot according to what you need.

We have a beagle and a Ford Fiesta (mine) and a Ford Focus (DH). Plenty of room for the dog and whatever else we need to.

Labrador and a Ford Kuga, perfect. Boot quite high so may be a problem for an older dog. I had to lift my old girl in , the last few months before we lost her . I was ordering a dog ramp but she died before it came

We have a basset hound and a Ford Focus estate, it works great with her although we do lift her in (she jumps out herself). When we are moving she sleeps, also put a rug in the boot. Lots of room for her and highly recommend it.
