Corgis?

Have read breed information and they look like a good choice for us - active house with older children - Somone at home ,90%of the time. But wondered if I could just have a bit of real life feedback if anyone has one before we commit thanks

I believe they have some experience.

Have you had dogs before OP? Any idea if you're looking for Pembrokes or Cardigans?

The reason I ask is that Corgis are wonderful, big characters in an adorable short arse package. BUT they require some experienced handling. They are bright dogs that require a lot of mental stimulation (not just physical exercise) and they can be very stubborn and strong willed. They are generally not a dog I would recommend for a first time owner because of this.

They can also be big barkers and prone to being a bit nippy (because of their breed history as herders). Plenty of socializing and good training is vital as they can be difficult with animals they don't know and be warned, they SHED!
They're also pretty rare these days, so be prepared to wait for the right puppy.

I know I've listed a lot of negatives there but you need to know and be prepared for them. Personally, I think they're a great breed and can be wonderful members of the family, but they're not for everyone and imo not for the inexperienced.

Yes had collies But moving to smaller house and limited outdoor space ; struggling to find the right breed 😂

I've had 2 in my life and they were awesome. They are fun loving souls. Big dogs on little legs. Mine were never big at barking and never nipped but by god they shed fur like you've never known. They were great with the kids but quirky. Terrified of hot air balloons and one was a bugger for watching tv and growling at any animals on it! I'm in the process of starting to look for another but they're rare.

Hi! I’ve got a Cardiganshire Corgi. She’s truly wonderful. Cardis are rarer than Pembrokes. They’re an endangered breed.
I second the view that they’re probably not for first time owners but you’ve had collies which are active intelligent dogs.
Mine can bark a bit when she gets excited but she does stop after a bit. Ours doesn’t shed unduly ...less than my collies used to. She’s not nipped anyone but out walking she can hussle me along by walking very close to my legs behind. I feel her muzzle on the back of my legs and she sort of goes from side to side behind me. Driving me basically! She does it mostly if she’s trying to persuade me to give her a treat. They’re bred to drive cattle by getting close up to the cattle behind. The short legs mean the cattle kicks will go over the corgi’s head.
Fantastic, clever, amusing, brave, independent little souls. Not many puppies available every year. So a bit of pre-planning and making contact with breeders necessary.

They’re rare now because when they were popular they were nasty and bitey.
Now their breeders should be more knowledgeable and discriminating, breeding for health and a nice nature rather than to sell as many as possible.
They used to be old ladies’ dogs, not good with children.
