Puppy eaten chocolate

My 4 month old King Charles cavalier has eaten part of a galaxy chocolate caramel celebration (9g miniature).

I have phoned the emergency vet and they said that she should be ok given a small amount of milk chocolate and that I’m to watch her for 3 to 4 hours for vomiting, diarrhoea or panting.

She seems fine in herself right now, i just wondered if anybody had any experience of this please?

My Jack Russell chewed through wrapping paper and ate an entire chocolate Santa meant for my niece. He's still here and a pain in the arse two years later 😂

I'm sure she'll be fine if it's a small amount. My dad feeds his dog chocolate and grapes 🙈
Just keep an eye on her.

Growing up with dogs I've learnt a fee things.

It has to be a stabstansial amount of chocolate to kill them, upset tummy maybe, but wont hurt. My chihuahua ate an entire share bar of fruit and nut Cadburys... didnt even bat an eyelid the little bugger.

They will literally eat anything, even if it's bad for them

Firelighters wont hurt a rhodesian ridgeback if ingested.

They eat them on purpose to make us worry and call the vet

She is eating, drinking and playing as normal. Such a worry.

You did the right thing phoning the emergency vet.

Chocolate toxicity depends on the dogs weight, the type of chocolate and the amount they have eaten. Dark chocolate is the worst and can prove toxic at small amounts compared to milk chocolate. This is why some people say their dog is fine eating chocolate whilst others aren't as it's all down to the three things above.

My springer spaniel ate a whole Easter egg my DS had stupidly left on the floor once. I was beside myself with worry, she was thankfully fine.

The higher the cocoa content vs the weight of the dog is a worry.

As explained to me a while ago by a vet nurse:

A labrador eating a 30g bar of Dairy Milk, whilst isn't ideal, it won't kill them.

A Yorkshire Terrier eating the same, could make them quite unwell but probably won't kill them.

A labrador eating half a bar of Green and Black's 80% cocoa solid dark chocolate, would land him in the vets. Same amount for a Yorkie would no doubt kill it.

Galaxy isn't high cocoa content and given the quantity eaten and size of the pup, so pup will be OK.

I know this because I have a labrador who ate a bar of Dairy Milk (she's also had 3 tubs of butter - not at the same time and not in the same house, but each time made her really unwell. Butter-vomit is not for the faint hearted)

If it's any comfort, my parents' small dog had half a square of Dairy Milk many, many times in her life and made it to 17.

And butter vomit is HORRIBLE.

It really is.

Butter is also another ingestion that needs to be vet-checked, it can make dogs very poorly. Again, according to advice given to me by our vets.

I've no idea how this snoring, farting, gorgeous beasty, who is lying next to me, has lasted 13 years.

She is 5kg, she ate part of the 9g chocolate which was milk chocolate and caramel. Say if she ate 6g of the chocolate it wasn’t 6g of all chocolate iyswim as part of it was caramel.

Vet said to call back if any d or v within 4 hours of her eating it. We are over an hour in now and she is asleep now (usually asleep at this time).

My dog ate about a quarter of a slice of millionaires shortbread when she was a puppy. She’s a tiny dog, at that time she probably weighed around 1 1/2 to 2 kilos, so I was very worried about her. I rang the vet and like you they said not to worry just to keep an eye on her and she was absolutely fine.

Of course the piece of raisin filled fruit cake she ate the day she was due to be dropped off with BIL while we went on holiday was another matter. It involved being rushed to the vets for an emergency vomit inducing injection. As did the time she ate a strip of fabric...

Our first dog (Sheltie) ate an entire share bar of Bournville Mint Crisp chocolate & wasn't even sick.

Then the two Shelties we had after him where master thieves! They got into & ate an entire box of Mint Matchsticks, including removing the outer sleeve without tearing it.
& another time they got into a box of Toblerone thins. It had a plastic film half pulled & as they couldn't remove the film or make it wider, between them (we assume) they licked the chocolate until it formed a little melted incline. Both were fine & extremely pleased with themselves!!

We had a family dog in the 80s, who regularly ate chocolate, before the advice you shouldn't give them it. One of the best stories was her eating a half pound box of Thorntons my brother gave me for my birthday.

We used to use chocolate to train her.

She lived to about 14 or 15.

Ps obviously advice has changed and I don't give the dog I have now chocolate. I'd rather keep it for myself. 😊

I've got a cocker spaniel who had a good old rummage in my handbag one day after pulling it off the side. He ate several polos (sugar free) and half a strip of my blood pressure tablets. The emergency rush to the vets at 90 miles an hour really didn't help my blood pressure, but thank god the little bastard was fine after he'd puked it all back up.

We are obsessive now about keeping things out of reach, so our new puppy is having to make do with the skirting boards

Our Jack Russell has had to have his stomach pumped twice as he ate chocolate-once he unwrapped a Christmas present (unbeknownst) to me that had a box of Guylian sea shells in it and had about 6 before I realised-the second time dd left half a small dairy milk within reach.

He was fine but a bit sheepish after both...

I wondered if the vet was being a bit over reactionary but I guess she was acting on the safe side.

Most expensive bar of dairy milk I'd ever bought that's for sure!

Mine ate our advent calender's 2 years running, whilst avoiding the doggy chocolate ones right next to them.
He has also eaten a large amount of chocolate cake and a sharing pack of dairymilk buttons.

However I can leave his 15kg bag of open dog kibble out and he won't touch that... I love him but hes a naughty little shit.

Don't worry! The thing you have to consider is how much cocoa is in a chocolate so dark solid chocolate is far more dangerous than filled milk chocolate. My dog got hold of Thornton's when he was a pup and I was told there's not much chocolate in them

Ps in years gone by dogs were often given all kinds of foods vets now say are bad, my in laws dog was on a diet of kitkats and penguins

When I was a child our neighbours labrador used to go to the ice cream van and get given a milky way every day.

Our puppy found some Maryland cookies at the park the other day. He has also snaffled a bowl of all bran, a full chicken carcass and a 500g bag of grated cheese all in the last few days. He has an iron stomach. His absolute favourite treat is horse poo, he eats some first then has a good roll about not
