Poo bags

We have had Ddog for nearly 2 years now and ever since the early days we have used biodegradable poo bags.

With the spotlight being on single use plastic I often wonder why dog owners use the non biodegradable ones. I understand the biodegradable ones are more expensive but we figured it was worth it. Maybe other dog owners can't spare the expense?

Do you use biodegradable bags or not?

We don't because we just use nappy bags. I think its more important to pick up waste and don't care what people use, its horrible seeing dog poo that owners don't pick up.

I'm all for biodegradable bags and we reduce our plastic elsewhere, I just don't think its all that important as long as its picked up. Ours doesn't really go on walks anyway and mostly uses the garden, where we just use the poop scoop with no bags, I maybe only use 1 bag a fortnight because of her toileting habits.

We use nappy sacks because we already have them. We have a pug so only use one or two a day.

Whatever's in the shop, though if given the choice will go for biodegradable ones.

I buy the Pets at Home degradable ones. Tbh it's more a case of those are the ones I like rather than for any noble reasons. They're a good size, they're strong and not see through.

A lot of the biodegradable bags I've bought in the past have been very thin and break easily, which is something I'd rather not have happen when I'm picking up dog poo.

I don't think they're particularly expensive, less than £2 for 200, can't remember exactly what I paid last time, but they're £1.50 if you buy them online, quite cheap in my opinion.

I have a small dog though, and the most she ever poos is twice a day, often it's only once a day, so it takes me quite some time to get through a pack of 200.

3 small dogs here, I get biodegradable ones from eBay so that I don't feel so bad about adding to the plastic strain on the planet.

I use biodegradable ones but, in my borough, we have to dispose of them in the general rubbish bins as they say they cannot process them separately any more and we are not to put them in the food waste/compost bins either. I have today discovered that in this area they do not go to landfill (as I thought, in which case they would eventually degrade) but everything goes to an incinerator a few miles away, which sounds appalling for climate change so you can't win either way.

Mostly goes at home, have biodegradable ones for walks but always consider whether stick n flick is more appropriate first

We always try for the stick and flick where appropriate too.
Our town doesn't have many poo bins so most bags get put in the general waste bins.
I know it's best to pick it up regardless but there must be millions of dogs in the uk alone and if only one poo bag is used each day then it's an awful lot of bags going to landfill.

But quite often I find I’m down to my last couple and have to get them in a rush so I have to buy what’s available, which most of the time isn’t bio ones

Degradeable or not, poo bags aren't single-use plastics in the same way that a drinking straw or ear bud is. The plastic used to make them is at the end of it's life. Poo bags (and bin bags) are made from recycled plastic of such a low grade there's nothing more valuable that can be done with it.

Having said that, we're currently using degradeable - simply because they're the only ones on the supermarket shelf.

I use nappy sacks , personally I think ‘stick and flick’ is disgusting , all poo no matter where it is should be picked up if possible ( ie not in the middle of waste high nettles ).

"Degradable" is a bit misleading anyway. No degradable plastic actually degrades in landfill. Landfill is dark and anaerobic, degradable and biodegradable plastics need light and oxygen to breakdown. Unless they're going into an ideal composting process, they're still going to hang about in landfill for centuries.

I use the water soluble poo bags as have a doggy ‘toilet’ plumbed into my waste pipe at home. Just chuck them in there and give it a squirt with the hosepipe. Best thing I’ve ever bought!
