How long after losing your dog did you decide to get another?

Following on from my thread the other day where our lovely dog was PTS. I know I am grieving, we miss her so much. I have always had a dog around and the house just feels empty. I’m a single mum and only work part time so have a lot of free time to walk etc..

People keep talking to me like it’s a bonus she’s gone as it means we can go away without having to rush back or arrange a dog sitter, she hated going in the car so could never take her with us. I do see people’s point but I do not go away often and the places we do go too are dog friendly (camping) so as long as a dog is happy to travel they could come with us. I walk a lot so would like a dog to come with me, seems odd without one.

How long after losing your dog did you look at getting another? Did you rescue or go for a pup? I don’t want a puppy and feel rescue would be our best option to find a dog that likes to travel and has the right temperament.

cjpark how awful, must have been a huge shock losing such a young healthy dog Sad.

I have just emailed a local rescue, they have one dog that maybe suitable (my dd spotted him and really wants him) but I’m unsure due to his size. At least the rescue will have my details if a suitable dog becomes available.

We got another dog about 6 weeks after!

When DDog died aged 11 we were devastated. We were going to have a break, but ended up adopting current DDog after 3 weeks. We hated not having a dog and it wasn't replacing our dog, rather giving a home to a dog who'd been in rescue for 4 years. It meant another dog could be rescued too. That was 3 years ago - DDog is 10 tomorrow Smile

So sorry for your loss. I got another 3 weeks after I lost mine. That was how long the home checks etc took or it would have been sooner. Couldn’t stand it without a dog in the house

Thank you.
I’m waiting to hear back from 2 rescues. Fingers crossed I will find our next doggie soon.
