Handhold, we lost our ddog suddenly

I’m devastated. Beyond any way I can describe. My 3year old podenco woke up Tuesday morning acting very strangely and was obviously very unwell. I took him straight to the vet who said he probably had an infection and administered AB’s.
I took him back two hours later as he was being very sick. He kept falling over, his eyes were rolling back, and his head kept jerking to the side. The vet said he obviously felt very sick and gave an anti sickness drug. He told me to give the medicine a chance to work and go back Wednesday morning.
Two hours after that visit I phoned the nearest vet hospital and asked for a second opinion. I took him straight in where he was admitted immediately and they began tests and made him comfortable. The next day he was having seizures and had went downhill very quickly and the diagnosis of meningitis came back. It got to the point where there was no chance of recovery and we made our way in to say our goodbyes.
While we were signing the forms we were informed that he had stopped breathing on his own.
I have been crying constantly since. His bed is empty, his lead and collar hanging up. I’m so so lost without him. I don’t know how to cope.

I’m so sorry to hear what you’re going through. It’s awful and tragic and rubbish :(

We’ve lost two dogs in sudden, tragic circumstances and it haunts me. I randomly burst into tears and can’t look at photos of them but I can honestly say that this raw empty grief you’re feeling will slowly go. But for now, I’m just sorry 😢

And I’m thinking of you. 💐

Itscoldouthere · 03/05/2019 00:24

I can imagine this is heartbreaking.
Dogs are family members and to loose him so suddenly is terrible.
So sorry for your loss.

DramaAlpaca · 03/05/2019 00:27

@Holly
I'm so sad to hear you've lost your boy, I lost one of my girls a year ago and miss her still. They take a huge piece of our hearts with them, take comfort that you gave him a life full of love and cherish your memories.
Rest easy bestest boy xxx

I am so sorry, how heartbreaking for you all. Sad I had no idea that dogs could contract meningitis. Losing a dog is truly awful, I am so incredibly sad for you.

I'm so so sorry to hear about your loss. Our dogs certainly leave their footprints on our hearts. A huge hug and handhold from me. Our dogs are family members and to lose one in such tragic circumstances is simply heartbreaking. (I lost mine in a horrible accident 3 years ago)

The grief will ease my lovely, slowly and surely. Thanks

BiteyShark · 03/05/2019 05:38

I'm so sorry Thanks

Aimily · 03/05/2019 05:46

I'm so sorry.
But remember he was so loved, that is so clear from your post.

spiderlight · 03/05/2019 13:23

Oh no. I am so, so sorry - that must have been absolutely awful. Heartbreaking :( Flowers It's hard enough when they're old and you're prepared, but to just have it happen like that must be dreadful.

LunaFortuna · 04/05/2019 17:34

I’m so sorry, what an awful shock for you. It is utterly heartbreaking. Gentle hugs from me and bless your lovely podenco boy xx

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 04/05/2019 18:22

It's bad enough when they're old, but to lose a young dog must be so much worse.

Flowers so sorry.

I’m so sorry . What a dreadful thing to happen . We lost our girl hound a few months ago to heart failure , and even though we knew the day would be coming , it was still a shock for us . I can’t imagine how you must be feeling x

Mouldiwarp1 · 07/05/2019 17:39

So very sorry to hear this. We lost Mouldidog very suddenly a few weeks ago and I still have a little cry most days. He was considerably older than your poor boy and it must be extra heartbreaking to lose him when he was so young and you were expecting many years together. Flowers

AllGoodDogs · 07/05/2019 19:55

I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

Dogparty · 07/05/2019 19:58

It must be absolutely devastating to lose a dog so young, I still have my first dog and he’s getting old and I dread the good bye every day. You have my greatest sympathies during this tough time. You did everything you could, bless you!

I’m so sorry for you, the loss of losing a young dog suddenly is just devastating. I lost my 5 year old boy suddenly last month following an infection, it all seems so unfair.

I’ve literally cried everyday since, I’ve never felt like this before, thinking of all the memories we were yet to make, we’ve been so unprepared to lose him this early.
I’m a few weeks in, and I’m far from being ok, but gradually it is getting better, as they say time is a healer. I’ve brought a lovely box and have gathered his blanket, ball, bowl etc in it. I’ve also bought a photo album and when I’m able to, I’ll fill it with pictures of him. I have a notebook I’m going to write down everything I can remember about him in it, funny stories, favourite walks, foods he liked, words he knew etc.
You’ve done everything you could to get treatment, now you need to be kind to yourself, cry lots and take each day as it comes xxx
