Cone of shame woes

My beautiful lab was neutered yesterday and has on the cone. He's whimpered incessantly since. Cone off for light walk and meals and he's fine, back on and he becomes the Scarlet Whimpernel again! Will he get used to it? Should I persevere? Try the inflatable? I need something on all the time as kids are on holiday and I just can guarantee I wouldn't get distracted! Help!

Could you get him a post op onesie instead?

I don't think he would tolerate that as he hates his raincoat!

I've seen the inflatable collars but a few reviews saying the cam still get to wound.

Is he as depressed as this?

I used a combination of the hard vet plastic cone which he managed to bite free from , the medical shirt which he would only tolerate when sleeping and the inflatable cone.

My dog would have got to his wound in the inflatable one if he had been determined enough. He could still get to the wound by stuffing his nose up the leg of the medical shirt. Therefore I ended up using them but still monitoring him most of the time.

If you can't supervise I would still stick with the plastic cone but as above be careful as my dog managed to destroy it, hence using a combination of the above.

We are on our last few days... he broke his cone yesterday walking into doors , again🙄
We had whimpering but not for long and may have been pain / initial confusion related. Now he's just bored so mini walks, training and lots of ear rubs

Just to say if your dog is desperate to get to his wound, the commonest reason is post op pain so please ensure you’re getting pain relief from your vets for 3-5 days post op minimum

I think the inflatable ones depend on the dog. More flexible and determined dogs can get to wounds with them, so use with caution.

My poor little cocker ended up wearing the proper hard plastic ones a couple of sizes too big when he had tail injury and subsequent 3/4 amputation because the little sod was super flexible, with a long tongue and could get to the wound in any smaller cone.

Thanks for the tips! I'm not sure the wound is bothering him much he does have painkillers which he's to take once a day. I'll see how he gets on if no success tonight I'll try him with an inflatable I think.

She had a mammary tumour. Cancer . Vet is confident she got it all out. Making sure her water bowl is away from the cupboards etc has been helpful with the cone and to keep it full!
It is currently repaired with Fragile tape!! Our legs are battered!! Ds hides on the table on seeing her approach!
Roll on tomo, sedation +stitches removed.

We used the baby gro of shame for our dog.

Our previous dog would walk along the side of an outside wall with his cone on to try to destroy it, and was usually successful

I really like the inflatable cones - my boy has had his on for 3 ops in the last year and couldn't reach his wounds (knees)

@Hoddykins that looks comfy. Like a pillow for airplanes or something.

Honestly Potterhead, he loves it! His brother likes to use it as a pillow too!

I used to pump up the inflatable one in the day so he was less likely to be able to get at the wound. At night I used to let some of the air out so he used it like a neck pillow

@Hoddykins those pics are so cute! I am going to see how he gets on tonight and might take a trip to pets at home tomorrow if he's still really unhappy.

Just a wee update to say he's doing better with it today although 3yo managed to get it off him so he had a wee lick! He's getting a check up later.

In order to achieve a peaceful night I sleep beside him on a mattress on the floor. I love that boy!
