How do you get a puppy...

that is not lining the pockets of unscrupulous breeders? I don’t really want a pedigree dog. I’m quite happy with a mixed breed but I’d like it to be on the smaller side. Do rescue centres have puppies often? Would love to hear about rescue puppies if anyone has one...

Rescues do have pups. They may not make it onto a website though! Is there a reason you don’t want an adult dog? (Puppies are bloody hard work!)

Thegirlisnotright · 08/04/2019 17:19

Yes I wondered that. It’s only adult dogs I can see on any websites. I’ve had a puppy before so I know how hard it is lol!

Puppies tend to get snapped up quite quickly in rescues and often don't make it onto websites before they're reserved.

It's a good idea to keep in regular touch with the centres (if you're looking at larger rescues) and the FB pages/groups of smaller rescues are generally more active than their websites.

rescue centres do have puppies, sometimes just not on the website. for example, the Diana BRIMBLECOMBE ANIMAL RESCUE CENTRE in berkshire have puppies that are around 10 months link. all the best x

sorry dont know why half of that was in capitals Confused

MoaningMinniee · 08/04/2019 17:41

We've just had a couple of pups. Black Retriever X rescue, on Facebook. Possibly a bit big for you, undoubtedly half collie, and I think they've both found homes now, but they do appear from time to time.

Also most of the unscrupulous breeders are the ones flogging the currently highly sought after breeds - French Bulldogs, Mini Dachshunds etc.

If a breeder doesn't insist on checking you over, walk away!

Many Tears rescue has puppies. I follow them on Facebook. They often come from breeders and are slightly older (5-6 mths) so I assume they’re the ones the breeders done want as they’ve not sold as tiny cute babies? Also there are rescues that get dogs from Romania and often it’s a mum with a litter of pups. There’s probably one in your area if you google.

TotalNoob · 08/04/2019 17:44

If you’re in the Shropshire/Worcestershire border area there’s a rescue called High Hopes that have several puppies coming from Romania that need homes on 20th April. On their fb page today.

CMOTDibbler · 08/04/2019 17:48

I foster puppies for a rescue, and we have 4-6 month olds most of the year, with a peak in mum with tiny pups/bitch whelps in rescue around April/May. My ddog2 was born in rescue after his mum was dumped by the side of the road 3 days before she had them.

Not all rescues will take pregnant bitches or tiny pups as you need to have a huge amount of time, experience, and a foster home for them. I fostered two from this litter once they were weaned and it was incredibly hard work

Thank you, I will keep looking at rescues in my area then (Scotland) and get talking to a few. We won’t be in a position to adopt a dog/puppy for a few months yet until after we move house and get settled though.

Definitely plenty of puppies in rescue - many born in rescue and many given up by owners at 6-9 months.
If you would consider 6-12 months old you would have even more choice and have the advantage of the pup either coming house trained or easy to quickly housetrain, and able to go on walks straightaway.
I've fostered numerous pups, most of which came to me at eight weeks and went to their new homes around 12-14 weeks, so still very young,

second chance kennels in scotland have a gorgeous pup called jim listed who is 11 months x
