I might be a granny!

My 2 year old bitch is in season. An elderly relative turned up for a visit last night with her 1 year old male dog (same breed). He was neutered a week and a half ago so she thought it was safe. I would have advised her against bringing him if I'd known she was coming.

I was changing DD's nappy and the dogs ran out of the room together. I asked relative to go check on them straight away but it was too late. They were upstairs mating. All we could do was wait.

I phoned the vet and although she said it was a very very slim chance, there is still a possibility that my lovely doggy could get pregnant. The doggy morning after injections cost £100 but the thing is, I am on maternity pay and so we're living paycheck to paycheck for the next couple of months until I go back to work. Savings have already been used to help us top up our monthly income. Would you find the money from somewhere to get the injection for DDog even though the chance is very slim, or would you risk it and cross your fingers? Please be kind!

Why on earth did you have another dog early if your dog is in season?
Pay out for the injection. Cheaper than a c section. And get the dog spayed. ASAP.

I would find the money - if the dog is pregnant then the costs associated with the pregnancy will be far higher than £100, you'd have the stress and faff of puppies, and a high chance of losing money even after puppies are sold.

If you can't afford £100 for the injection then I'm confused how you'll afford vet bills and other expenses for a litter of puppies!

£100 versus several thousand pounds in feeding and caring for a pregnant dog and then delivering and raising her pups. I know which I would go for OP!

The chance is very slim so I would risk it I think.

I had a big dog jump a six foot fence to get to my tiny 6 month old bitch in heat just out for a widdle. Brought her to the vet the next day and they sorted it out - it was an operation of some description. I have no idea what they did - removed her womb or something? It cost a couple of hundred, she was a bit unwell for about 24 hours, but was fine afterwards. It's almost impossible to prevent dogs from getting to bitches. They are bastards.
My Dad had a prize winning sheep dog who was brilliant. Think 'One man and his dog brilliant'. He would frequently get the whiff of a bitch in heat and be gone in the middle of bringing cattle in when he got the scent. He'd be gone for days lol.

Can't remember what happened to him. My Dad still talks about him. He was a bit of a genius dog if a bit of a Casanova.

As an aside, I think a lot of Mners are married to the human equivalent of this dog.

As has been said, the cost of the mismate jab pales into insignificance compared to the cost of raising a litter. Even when everything goes right it's expensive and if anything goes wrong expenditure can very easily end up in the thousands.

Even if the money wasn't an issue raising a litter is extremely hard work. It's pretty much a 24/7 job, you wouldn't be able to go off to work and leave your bitch and her pups at home.

Either get the mismate jab or go for an emergency spay. It's just not worth the risk.

I was very precious about my tiny tiny dog so my vet was amused almost. I think I said something like 'my puppy was raped by a neighbouring dog'. He had to stop me crying in the first instance until I could be coherent enough to discuss whether I wanted puppies - I was like - she's 8 months old!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No, she's not ready for puppies!!!! Ok, do you ever want to breed off her? NO!!!!!!!!!! Ok, stop worrying, we can sort it out. It was more traumatic for me than anyone else. The vet loved my tiny dog. Then I went through a whole month of thinking, I've denied my dog ever becoming a mother! My beautiful pup was stolen and I've never had a pet since as I think I'm not capable of owning a pup!

My dsis's dog's puppy is famous as it was a tiny puppy with a heart condition. A university veterinary clinic operated on the tiny puppy because my dsis almost cried when they told her it would be 3k. They felt sorry for my dsis and a lot of veterinary students allowed at the operation. The dog is now famous - 'Oh is that Caroline?' We've studied her!

We are both farmer's daughters!!!!!!!! You'd think we'd know about death of animals, but the first thing I get told when I call my Dad is a loss of livestock.

You're all right. I'll get the injection. I think I was in denial. Money is tight right now whilst I'm off work but would definitely be tighter still if ddog was pregnant!

@Whatad I totally get it! I was traumatised last night, I cried for an hour. It didn't help that she was whining for a while whilst the whole thing was taking place but then it was pointed out that she does the same kind of excited whine when she thinks she's getting chicken...

Can't you ask the relative to pay as it was her dog and her decision to pay an unexpected visit without checking with you?? Or pay half at least, it does take two to tango .... I'd be annoyed with them for putting you in this situation in the first place!

If she's had her first season they can stop her becoming pregnant ever. I couldn't cope with the details as I'm a bit of a twit when it comes to dogs. Growing up on a farm, you'd think I wouldn't, but this dog was tiny - she was a miniature Jack Russell so I know MN won't agree with that sort of breeding but she was a pet, not a working or show dog. And if you think she was bought from a puppy farm, she wasn't, she was bought from a Mum and 16 year old dd who really didn't want her to go.

Deffo get the injection. I have 3 left of a litter of 9 pups and my total costs before I even sold a pup was £1600 . Stud fee, health checks, scan, emergency c section, neuter at the same time, heat mats, Whelping kits, emergency vets for two pups that almost died , microchips, worming etc and food was £60 a week and these are Chinese crested, not massive big dogs! Had to sell 4 puppies just to break even. This is my third and likely final litter as it has been so labour intensive due to the massive litter, I just can't do it again. They are gorgeous but v v expensive and vv exhausting.

My mother chose to breed off a Kennel club shih tzu. I was about 19, and it was like a fucking ambulance run to the vet (10 miles away) as I was crying as the poor dog was giving birth to babies and whimpering and my feet in the front seat. She was spayed after that as my mother, mean as she is, didn't like seeing her dog in pain and also seeing the dog have to give away her pups! Her dog that time spent about 24 hours at the vets and was allowed home.

We have a history of giving pups to people where we can still see them. Though one was sold to the equivalent of Mayfair. I always hope that pup is still living on Perrier.
