eating every little thing

Hi all, wondering if anyone has advice. Pup is 16 weeks. We're starting to train him to walk on the lead, he's fine in parks but on the pavement tries to chew every little thing we pass. Pavements aren't that clean unfortunately so seeds and twigs but also bits of glass, fag ends, bits of plastic, stones etc and this evening's treat - a screwdriver bit! The method for walking on lead we learnt in class was to go really slow, one step at a time so they want to come alongside you - so I don't want to be pulling him away. but also don't want him to ingest something harmful. Any ideas? Thank you.

One of my dogs is a really bad scavenger. We use a muzzle on her. I just feel safer knowing she can't eat everything she finds. I like Baskerville ones the best. Be sure to get the classic and not the Ultra, as that is for biting.

hi LimeJellyHead, many belated thanks for your reply and advice. I will have a look at muzzles. Thankfully it seems to be getting slightly better, he responds better to 'leave it', and tends more to mouth things then spit them out, but still seems to have a fondness for weird plastic widgets of which there seem to be many on the pavements around here...

Our springer pup was exactly the same, we found that she grew out of it at around 5/6 months old.

Our 10 month old was terrible at that age. Thought I’d never be able to relax with him on walks. He’s loads better now. Think it lasted a month but slowly improved in that time.
He still likes to eat a stick occasionally but will drop it unless it’s particularly delicious.
I wouldn’t worry about a muzzle yet

Springer pup was also the same. High value treats and plenty of practise at leave it, plus growing up, seems to have cured the problem.

Except where little rabbit droppings truffles are concerned.

Horse poo is ddogs delicacy. Had to pull a HUGE piece out of his mouth the other day. 🤢

Was at the field the other day, and some dirty person had left behind a dirty nappy, my pup didn't pick it up but another ladies did, some people are just disgusting.

Mine also did that when he was younger. They do 'mostly' grow out of it

I did say 'mostly' . Now he will only try and eat really disgusting things anything decomposing
