What natural chews do you give your dog?

My pup will be 1 later this month. Until now she's just had antler chews or yak milk chews.

I think she's ready for something more interesting / longer lasting to chew on as the antlers aren't smelly enough to keep her interested and the yak chews are super expensive and last about two days... but I have had totally conflicting advice from different pet shops on what's appropriate.

What do you give your dogs to chew?

(For info, she's part poodle, part retriever and pretty sizeable. Fed on lightly cooked meat with high quality veg mixer, and grain-free semi soft kibble for training treats.)

Moon bones and, er, bull pizzle.. Gross but last the longest of all her treats and are seemingly delicious....

Mine likes dried ox tails. They look like dessicated fingers though.

Bought pigs ears and pizzles. But his absolute favourite is a freshly sawn off deer leg complete with hooves and fur. The deer has been shot BTW and is a fresh kill. Not sawing off a leg of a living deer. I don't do the shooting.

Buffalo horn. Smells quite pungent though, so I choose to limit his access or else the whole lounge smells decidedly 'bovine'. He can't get enough of the damn thing though

Alternatively, soaking antlers overnight in water tends to renew interest a bit. Soaking them in low salt stock does so even more.

Mine currently has a cows ear , some camel hide and braided lamb tendon on the go . He also likes braided ostrich tendon and dried duck necks but the latter is crunchy not chewy so doesn’t last long . He does have an antler but rarely goes near it and the yak chews didn’t last five minutes

Lily's kitchen used to do the most amazing dried fish skins, they stink to high heaven but my dog loved them and they made his coat really shiny. I'm not sure they still do them but any dried fish skins would be good.

I also buy our puppy the split deer antlers, they are far more appealing than the whole ones and much easier to get their mouths around.

Pizzle sticks, lamb tendon in braids, pig/cow/goat/rabbit ears, tripe, paddywhack, dried chicken - all sorts, really. He had a camel chew a while ago that he absolutely loved as well.

I will say though, mine really isn't keen on fish chews for some reason!

You could try these. It’s a free delivery. They have a full range of food but also, some unusual and healthy treats. My dog loves the pigs ears which are very different to the chemical smelling ones I was buying her from the shops. Their food is very specific in terms of “what’s in it” too. No vague “derivatives”. We like it.

You've had some great suggestions which I won't bother to repeat.

However, my local butcher does meaty beef bones for dogs quite cheaply. I have him chop them into fist sized pieces (usually works out about 20p each) and freeze them individually, before defrosting them and doling them out occasionally. I don't raw feed otherwise, and it's not caused any problems for DDog.

He strips them clean, but has to be given them when he's hungry as otherwise he'll bury them and dig them up later Best to keep young children and any other dogs away as they're so valuable to a dog that many a placid dog has growled to defend their meaty bone.

Morrisons do marrow bones, my dogs love them, you can always scoop some of the marrow out if you think too rich for the dog.

Cows hooves. Buy in bulk from zooplus. Miracle things.

There's loads of chews out there that are long-lasting and not bones :)

Our Giant dog loves his coffee wood chew it’s like a big soft stick. Makes a bit of a mess but he eats the wee bits of wood which are apparently good for him.
Teeth cleaning quick chews we use cows/bulls tails.

As odd as it is my ddogs get enthused by a veg bag!!

I remember giving mine doggie friendly "roast dinner" for Christmas - he had a mix of plain chicken, carrots, peas and doggy gravy. He ate every single morsel except the peas!

Off dog chew shopping tomorrow with a lovely shopping list! Although I have just tried her on a carrot after the veg bag suggestion and it’s going down a treat.

@chocolate - I wouldn't feel too bad - DDog was very happy to receive the cucumber from my pub lunch salad garnish the other day!

Feeling a tiny bit smug with ddog's diet today. She had a massive tumour remove last week. Found out today it was cancerous but they managed to remove it all - and no detection in the lymph nodes.
So happy! Big broccoli stalk going her way tomorrow!!

Just bought my dog a Lily's Kitchen dental chew today. It has all natural ingredients and she seemed to enjoy it. Time will tell if it agrees with her tummy.

Dog was fine with the Lily's Kitchen chew btw.
