Puppy jumping up and being nippy at visitors

Grey dog is 17 weeks and isn’t too bitey to us at home but with visitors he immediately jumps up and is nippy and just loses all manners. Main visitors are my parents and I’ve asked them to ignore him but any tips? He seems to get very excited.

Put him on the lead until he calms down.

Ideally you want to prepare for visitors before they arrive and ask them to help you out with training. The puppy should be on a lead and arm yourself with nice treats. When people come in say the puppy’s name and see if you can get his attention - treat on nose might help if he is too excited to respond to his name. The visitor should walk up to the puppy, if the puppy keeps all four feet on the ground the visitor can also treat, if the puppy jumps up the visitor should fold their arms, turn their back to the puppy and walk away. The visitor should to approach three times, if the puppy still can’t keep all four feet on the ground he should be taken further away until he settles.

We use baby gates ,jumpers/nippers get kept behind until they've calmed down sufficiently to listen to commands . Your pup should pick it up pretty quickly at 17 weeks .

Control and Management
Ø Put puppy in another room or behind a childgate when visitors first arrive to avoid over excitability
Ø Greet people with puppy on lead
Ø Maintain distance from people to avoid jumping up when puppy is on lead
Ø Avoid putting puppy in excitable situations that are too much for puppy to cope with at this stage

Training
Ø Teach puppy that people only say hello when puppy’s four feet or bottom is on the floor - owner to reward by dropping treats onto floor - best to be owner to not add more excitement to puppy from the visitor
Ø Improve ‘Sit’ with distraction
Ø Practise ‘Sit to say “please”
Ø Practise “Let’s Go” to steer puppy from over excitable or inappropriate ‘greeters’
Ø Ensure any inappropriate jumping up is not inadvertently reinforced with a “oh it’s OK, I like puppies”

Battendog came a long way with just these two. He would never bother about treats on the floor if a visitor was here but he learned the "granny's rule" pretty quickly. Eat your greens and you can have your pudding... or in his case, keep your feet on the floor and you can say hello to the guests.
