Pointers for my puppy plan

Hi, so this is my plan. I welcome recommendations etc.

Bring puppy home and meet ( dry chilled cat like current dog) in a mutual area and walk home together. Puppy carried as no 2nd jab.

Current dog bed in kitchen for current dog.

Puppy crate will go in the small room under the stairs, we will take the door off this room and replace with baby gate. Vet bed in crate and water/ food at other end. This room leads into the kitchen but crate will be tucked around the corner so pup in there at night then baby gate to stop dog going near crate.

Toilet training. I was going to attempt not using puppy pads etc. I work from home so there no reason pup can't go out every hour? 2 hours? How often through the night. I expect accidents etc.

Does this sound like a good plan?

A pup has to go every 20 minutes or so in the beginning and after they eat, play, drink.. At night they might wake a few times for the first couple weeks

You need to watch for signs they need to go and then get them out. Can you take time off?
I wonder about you carrying pup. Is older dog one that likes being picked up? Likely to be jealous. Overthinking this? Me?

Crikey Moses every 20mins! I remember it being regular but not that regular 😂 that's fine though, whatever it takes. I shouldn't need to take time off as I'm very flexible and pup can be with me at all times. At night time I've read people use a radio to soothe etc. What do you think?

And also if pup needs a wee through the night shall I set alarms to let it out? I'm not too sure if I'll be hear it so even considering a baby monitor 😂

Current dog is so chilled I doubt he will care at all so very lucky there. My brother recently brought his new rescue dog over and my dog literally ignored him and went back to sleep! He's getting on a bit now so not much phases him.

I found working at home challenging with toilet training. Expect to be working late at night to catch up.

I slept close by but had a baby monitor so I could see and hear him but I also set an alarm to take him out as well.

I honestly couldn't have worked from home when mine was very young. They need a lot of attention if you don't want to be cleaning up accidents everyday.

Yeh agree, after thinking about it I think I'll take the first week or so off but my working hours are 10-3 and I also intend on taking pup on the school run with me. Hubby said he will take the second/third week off. I'm flexible also as it's family business so that's not really an issue. How would you play the nights out?

I'd be a bit flexible in my ideas about the nights.

You might find that puppy won't be happy with being alone in crate at first and you'll need to have puppy nearer to you for a while, unless you want crying all night; remember this is a baby animal who has just been taken from his mother.

I've just been clearing through the camping stuff and have a blow up bed easily accessible. Great point! I'm so excited :)

I've just got a puppy (10 weeks) & he's been with us since he was 8 weeks. We're also cate training & he'll be a big dog when older so we bought a big crate with a divider, so he only has enough room to move comfortably in the crate. This apparently stops them wanting to go to the toilet as they don't like toileting where they sleep. If they have a large crate, they can toilet at one end & sleep at the other. I slept downstairs with him for the first week but only took him out if he whimpered for few minutes without stopping. Then took him out, no talking/fussing just using a torch, then back in the crate (where he often whined for 5 mins before going back to sleep). He was up about 2/3 am then 5.30/6.30 ish. After the first week I went back to my bed with a baby monitor & he now sleeps 11-6.30/7.30 with no accidents (touch wood)

During the day I take him out every 25/30 mins when he's awake or playing. I used to take him out after every meal but he rarely did anything, so I now stick to the 25/30 mins. Then as soon as he wakes up he goes out. I decided against puppy pads as I think they confuse them into thinking it's ok to wee indoors. Some of his litter mates are in large crates with puppy pads & they're still using the pads. He's only had a handful of accidents & they've pretty much been when it's been 25 mins since he went out & I've not realised the time. He's also started whimpering to go out.

I think it'll depend on the size of dog with how regularly you need to take them out.

My pup is a large breed so I started at every 30 minutes but he didn't always do anything, so now it's every 60/90 minutes (at 12 weeks) I still take him out as soon as he's eaten and woken up though.

Just see how you get on, not all dogs are the same so it may be 20 minutes for some pups but longer for others

Mine slept in our room so he woke us up at night. Probably 2-3 times a night until 13 weeks, then twice for another week, then once a night up until 5 months old or so. We'd go upto bed at our usual time around 11pm and take him out then, then he'd sleep until about 5, need a wee, then go back to sleep until we woke up at 7.

Yes see how you go in. I got told every 20 mins and my lab puppy could hold on for about 45mins - 1 hour at 8 weeks. He would ask to go out too so just watch them.

Didn’t get up in the night. First few nights he weed on newspapers (we had a pen attached to the crate. Then he stayed dry from 10.30-7.30. When he sleeps in the day he’ll be dry for 2 hours.

It’s like babies, they’re all different.
