Will this behaviour calm down eventually? 11 week old pup.

Hi everyone.

So our 11 week old pup is settling in a treat. She is now sleeping 8 hours at night in her crate, barely any toilet accidents in the house (usually my fault for not keeping a hawk eye on her), is learning some tricks and starting puppy classes on Monday. I’m so smitten with her Smile

Just want a bit of advice really (she’s my first pup)- when she goes in her crate at night, she barks/whines for a few minutes then settles to sleep and stays settled all night.

She is crated for 30 minutes each morning when I do the school run. I make sure she’s fed and watered, played with and tired out before she goes in there. However she barks and cries for about 10 minutes, then settles to sleep ( I have a camera so can check on her while out).

I feel awful knowing she’s distressed for this short time- will this settle down eventually though? I give her a kong in the crate with a high value treat when I go.

She also barks (but not constantly) whenever I leave the room to go to the toilet and is very attached to me.

Forgot to add- she rarely goes in her crate of her own accord, it’s usually coz I’ve popped her in there.

At that age I would keep her with you. I slept by mine. She came on the school run. Let her follow you. Yes. Even to the toilet! Grin

Can you not take her on the school run?

I take my, now 3 yr old on the school run and have done since he was a pup . He loves it

Not possible for her to come with me I’m afraid wolfie.

She’s ok in her crate after 5-10 minutes or so, I just want a bit of reassurance that this will settle eventually. She sleeps all night in there happily too, in the kitchen.

I couldn’t carry mine. I took her in the car to the school and another parent walked my child in.
5-10 minutes is a long time for such a little pup. She could end up being fine or being left to cry could cause separation anxiety in the long run. The best and most up to date advice is not to leave your pup for any longer than she is comfortable with. So no crying at all.

I have 5 children so I cant ask anyone to take them into school for me.

She will settle. Maybe try not playing and over stimulating her before you go out. If she’s going to bed excited and alert she’s more likely to make a fuss.

I have twins, one holding each hand next to the busy road.

School don’t allow dogs on the premises either.

Think it's clear you can't take the pup on the school run and that's fine. It's only half an hour, and it's impossible to never leave your house just because you have a puppy.

If she is settling pretty quickly I wouldn't worry too much. Prolonged crying or any destructive behaviour would be more worrying but it doesn't sound like this is the case.

Its a good idea to start separation training with her - especially if she’s whining when you go to the loo etc. You need to be able to leave her without her getting anxious. Make sure the crate has everything she needs and that she gets a lovely long lasting treat to occupy her when she goes in there - kong or similar

It’s up to you. Best advice is not to leave her if she’s not happy. It’s hard but the alternative could be separation anxiety and a dog you can’t ever leave. Can DH/DP help?

Thank you kittyKat, she has such a lovely nature too. It’s horrible hearing her bark, I feel such a relief when I look on the camera and she’s gone to sleep.

When I’m in the house she never chooses to go in the crate and always wants to be near me (which is fine and the reason I got a dog in the first place, ha) I just hope she grows to love the crate a little bit more. She seems to know full well it’s her bed at night anyway!

Maybe don’t give her any breakfast but a nice frozen kong to keep her entertained too!

Sorry to derail with nosey question but what breed is pup? One of the most beautiful I've ever ever seen! Just to make sure it's one on my list for future rehoming dogs when we are ready as a breeds personality of course varies but yours sounds bloody lovely :)

She is not a husky mix.

She’s a Eurasier. I’ve been on a breeders waiting list for a year.

My lab pup came into school a hoodie with a special pouch with coat zipped up.

It is unwritten rule small pups can be on site if not on ground and not interactivity with children.

He LOVED the attention noise and smells.. especially the office staff his little head would peep out the top of my coat.

He's now 10kg so he stays on his cage in the car with puppy music for anxious dogs playing on YouTube ;)....puts him right to snooze mode.
